Caleb Williams Speaks: No Slouch Games, Ready for the Road Ahead

Sunday’s matchup with the New York Giants seems like a winnable game for the Chicago Bears at home in front of the Soldier Field crowd. The Giants are 2-5 on the season, 0-5 on the road, and the Bears are four and a half point favorites.

Still, quarterback Caleb Williams says Chicago won’t be looking past the Giants on Sunday, speaking at his weekly press conference, that there’s no “slouch game” in this league.

“When you go out there and you play vs. those guys, you know, those guys are playing for their life, those guys are playing for their job and their team,” Williams said Wednesday. “There’s no slouch game. There’s none of that. We approach each game with the same mindset. All these games build confidence.”

A confidence builder would be nice. A 6-3 record on the other side of their meeting with the G-Men on Sunday would be even nicer, especially considering the schedule beyond this week. After meeting New York at Soldier Field, Chicago travels to Minnesota to take on the Vikings. From there, the Bears have matchups with the Steelers, Eagles, and Packers, with the Eagles and Packers matchups coming on the road.

Caleb Williams’ continued growth will have no shortage of tests in the second half

While November will start with a soft spot in the schedule in the Giants, the rest of the month will define the 2025 season, as far as playoff hopes are concerned, anyway.

Regardless, after watching Chicago score 47 points last Sunday — specifically watching the offense run the most plays they’ve had all season and succeed in both phases —I feel more confident in the Bears’ chances when that schedule tightens up after this week. Williams does, too.

“I think it’s just a different year, different vibe,” Williams said. “I think we’ve done a good job in some of those games; I would say that last year we didn’t do a good job in close games, tight games. I think we’ve won those games, and now we need to get to the point where we’re hitting on all cylinders as a team, all three phases of football, to be able to go out there and put up a lot of points and keep the other side with the least amount of points possible.”

Williams’ development has played a significant role in the differing vibes this season, and his head coach believes the best is yet to come for Williams.

“I do think he’s getting better every week,” Johnson said on Wednesday. “There’s ups and there’s downs. And some weeks are better than others, which we knew. But he’s in a lot better place now with his process than he was to start the season. The week isn’t necessarily smooth sailing always, but I think that’s to be expected with Year 1 in a new system. So he’s learning, and he’s spending a lot of time at it, so I’m very pleased with his approach. I think we’ve got the right group of guys around him to help support him. And so I think we’re going to continue to see him take off here the second half of the season.”

There’s no denying that the growth we’ve seen from Chicago’s second-year quarterback has played a role in the team’s success. Last Sunday’s win over the Bengals marked the fifth of the season, matching their win total from 2024. It also moved them into a tie for second place in the NFC North with the Detroit Lions, and just a half game behind the Green Bay Packers for the top spot in the division.

But Williams knows there’s still plenty of work to be done. “I’ve got to keep growing,” Williams said. “I’ve got to keep being consistent for these guys… And when it comes down to game day… just be the same guy I am at practice. And then from there, go out, and when it’s time to win ballgames, go win them.”

The second half of the season features a trip to Minnesota, three matchups with the Packers and Lions, a visit to Philly where they’ll meet the reigning Super Bowl champions, a home date against Aaron Rodgers, and a meeting with the San Francisco 49ers in Santa Clara that is tentatively scheduled for Sunday Night Football.

“We got some really good teams coming up on the schedule, starting with this week,” Johnson said of Chicago’s second-half schedule. “And so, the better Caleb plays, the better off we’re going to be in the long run, obviously, but it’s going to take all of us here, coaches, players, it’s going to take all of us this last stretch.”

Williams understands what’s ahead for Chicago and wants the challenge.

“We’re 5-3, and we understand what’s in front of us and where we want to go,” Williams said. “That’s everything that we want.”
