User Experience

The Divoom Times Frame came in a very elaborately decorated box. Trust me. You wouldn’t miss it on a retail shelf. It’s wrapped with plastic and when you open it, you’ll find the frame wrapped in protective wrap, the user manual, a quick start guide, a USB-A to USB-C cable for power, and a cleaning cloth. There is also a piece of cardboard that is the exact size of the glass in the frame. It’s included in case you want to block out the backlight from the frame. With some of the designs, it’s very helpful as the light shining completely through the frame dulls the design on the front.

There are two controls on the right side that allow you to access the device’s menus along with the speaker and microphone. According to the manual the buttons control the following functions:

Getting started is easy. You download the app, set up your account (no charge), and then add the device to the app. In my case, the frame needed a firmware update so, I completed that. The frame came pre-loaded with some already-made clock face designs and after I set my time zone and temperature unit preference, I started playing around with the different designs that were available.

There is a lot of customization you can do within the Divoom app, but it’s not a touchscreen interface so you are limited to customizing from within the app. There is a face gallery that you can choose from, too, and you can create your own. So far, I haven’t had any problems with the app or the connection between my phone and the frame. Commands seem to be accepted quickly and it updates like it should.

I’m very impressed with the quality of the display. It’s very crisp and bright. There is a brightness control in the app, which helps to even out the display with other light in your workspace.

There are two things that are a bit bothersome for me. First, the power source is a simple USB-C to USB-A cable. There is no option to mount this to the wall because the placement of the USB-C port on the rear of the frame makes it impossible for it sit flush against the wall. Second, there is no power adapter included with the frame. Even though they are a dime a dozen, there are specific power requirements for the frame and when there are specific power requirements, I think a power adapter should be included.
