Every single day since its October 24 opening, Gino & Gianni’s Pizzeria has sold out of dough.
“Seeing people’s reactions, feedback, some of the interactions I have daily, that’s kind of the best part, honestly, is seeing how happy they are,” said owner Giovanni Georgees.
The new La Mesa pizzeria is a facet of the popular MammaMia Deli Market, with a wooden, wine-cellar-esque door connecting the two.
Despite a turbulent economy and small business closures left and right, Georgees opened the pizzeria less than 11 months after opening the deli.
However, he wasn’t worried. Pizza was always the next step, the next “dream” for Georgees.
Georgees says there are no nearby Sicilian delis and no New York-style pizza by the slice in San Diego in general and in La Mesa in particular.
“I think there’s always a demand if there’s a void in the market. or if there’s something that people are going to want and need, no matter how the market is, whether people are struggling or not,” Georgees said. “We offer an insanely quality product, and our price is very fair compared to San Diego.”

The pizzeria also offers beer on tap, wine, salads, pasta and garlic knots.
A Godfather mural is among the visuals
Visually, the new La Mesa pizzeria combines Baroque-era painted ceilings and stone walls with modern homages, including a Godfather mural, pizza chandeliers and lit-from-behind marble beneath the pizza display.

(Photo by Calista Stocker/ Times of San Diego)“I have a real passion for interior design,” Georgees said. “Obviously, I wanted it to be visually attractive, but more so, I wanted to create an experience when you come here. Just like when you’re in Italy, or even on the East Coast, there’s things like this almost on every corner. But in San Diego, I felt like there wasn’t.”
East County residents Brandon Berke and Brice Taylor were big fans of MammaMia Deli Market and had high hopes for Gino & Gianni’s Pizzeria.
“Even just the pepperoni pizza is iconic, is hands down really amazing,” Berke said. “It’s easy on the sauce, generous with the toppings, so it blends well. The crust is really good, too.”
The two also commended the design of the space and Georgees’ commitment behind the counter.
“I recommend,” Taylor said. “I mean, the owner’s right there behind the counter doing his thing. So yeah, that shows a lot about a company.”
Gino & Gianni’s pizzeria currently operates under relatively limited hours of 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, with plans to extend hours and the team soon.
“For now, I can’t really get away from the pizzeria, because it’ll take time to get there, just like the deli. But without a team, none of this is possible,” Georgees said.
“Lately, I’ve been able to leave earlier, and not stay here all day and [my wife will] come and kind of be my eyes. Without her, without my managers in place here, it wouldn’t be possible, or I would have to just stay glued here 24/7.
“That’s also something I didn’t want, because I still want to be a present father,” he added. “That’s most important to me.”
The pizzeria is named after Georgees’ two sons, just as he named MammaMia deli in honor of his late mother and his parents named their restaurant after him.
“I want to name it in honor of my kids and because everything I do is for them,” Georgees added. “I want to leave a legacy, and that’s always been super important to me. And, you know, they’re like babies, and they’re gonna be able to grow up kind of like how I did….
“One day, hopefully, they’ll be running this.”
