Tom Bergeron is making a long-awaited return to Dancing with the Stars. The beloved TV host, who helmed the first 28 seasons of the ABC celebrity ballroom competition, will return for the show’s 20-year anniversary show, which will air on Nov. 11. But instead of hosting, Bergeron will serve as a guest judge—and fans love the idea.
Bergeron’s big news was revealed on the Nov 5 episode of Good Morning America, where he said “it feels really good” to go back to the show, even if just for one night.
“I’m really looking forward to it,” Bergeron, 70, said. "I have to credit Conrad Green, who was my original showrunner back in 2005. He really kind of extended the olive branch and got me reminiscing about all of the fond memories… and I’m really looking forward to getting back.”
Bergeron noted that the 20-year milestone for Dancing with the Stars was significant. “Twenty years for any primetime show is amazing," he said. "To be 20 years old and also have a ratings resurgence as they are, you’re more likely to see a zebra playing a piano. Bergeron credited Green and his team for getting the show back to its “essence.”
After the GMA announcement, Bergeron, who left DWTS in 2020, posted a throwback from his days on the show to Instagram and captioned it, “See ya Tuesday!”
Fans had a big reaction to Bergeron’s return to the DWTS ballroom, where he will sit alongside seasoned judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Bruno Tonioli, and Derek Hough.
“I can’t love this enough!!!! Happy anniversary to us!” one commenter wrote.
“CAN'T WAIT!!!❤️” added another.
“YESSSS! Ballroom dad is back,” a third fan chimed in.
“AHHHHH YESSS A DREAM COME TRUE,” wrote another.
“Giving the people what they want!” another DWTS fan added.
Bergeron told TV Insider he’s “anticipating that it’s going to be a wonderfully emotional, nostalgic night,” and teased his judging style will be "loose and unpredictable.”
To fans who had previously asked if he would be returning for the show’s 20th anniversary episode, he said, “I will offer an apology. I kind of deliberately misled some people on social media who had kind of guessed, “You’re coming back as a judge, right?” And I [said], 'Well, I may be traveling, so at the very least, I want to send a video message.' I tried to throw them off the scent a little bit.”
After years of saying he would not ever return to Dancing with the Stars, in July, Bergeron told USA Today he had been in touch with Green to talk about a potential cameo. “We did have lunch, and we did talk, and I offered a scenario where I might come back for a night in a certain capacity,” the DWTS OG said last summer. “The mirrorball is back in their court.”
