Robert Irwin reflected on his experience on Dancing with the Stars—and revealed what his endgame is. On Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Night, the Australian conservationist performed a passionate Paso doble with his pro partner Witney Carson and inched another week closer to the mirrorball trophy.
But in an interview with Good Morning America after the live show, Irwin, whose sister Bindi won DWTS Season 21 with pro partner Derek Hough, revealed that winning the trophy isn’t his ultimate goal. When asked how badly he wants another mirrorball trophy in the family, Irwin, 21, replied, “I’ll tell you, what I want more than anything else is to keep spreading passion and positivity with America. Like that’s what I wanted to do coming into this.”
“And every week, the fact that all of you guys want to have us back, it means the world,” he added. “But it means so much to my message, to what I’m all about, that we as a team try to create. We want to tell important stories through dance."
Irwin didn’t disregard “the fun ones” like the White Stripes-inspired Rock and Roll Hall of Fame dance he performed, but he added that he wanted to present stories of grief, loss, fun, and joy. “I really hope we can do that all the way to the end. That’s the goal, 100 percent,” he said.
Earlier in the week, Irwin told Extra TV he was just “stoked” to make it past week one in the ABC celebrity ballroom competition. “I was just like, ‘this is great,'” he said.” And now every week that we’re here just feels like such a gift.”
He added that the fact that America decides through their votes every week to invite him back to the ballroom means the world to him. “We’re trying to tell stories through the dances we create,” he said of him and Carson. “Stories of fun and joy, of grief, of loss, of power and strength. I just love that everybody, all you guys, listen to that, and you want to experience that, kind of come with us on this journey. It’s awesome.”
“But you know, Bindi did win that mirrorball, she did," he noted of his older sister. “And no pressure. But you know what? We’re gonna give it 100 percent. We’re gonna go for it.”
Irwin added that just being part of the Dancing with the Stars experience makes him feel like he’s already won.
Some Fans Think Robert Irwin Is Being Underscored on ‘DWTS’
Irwin received his first 10s of the season on Dancing With the Stars Halloween Night, but he has yet to receive a perfect score from the judges. Fans continue to vote to keep him in the competition, but some think he’s being underscored.
"Robert is being robbed! Why didn't he get a perfect score??? Give this man all the 10s! This was so good,” one Instagram commenter wrote of his Paso doble, which received two 10s and two 9s from judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Derek Hough, Bruno Tonioli, and Flavor Flav.
“THIS SCORE WAS ABSURD!! A perfect score if I’ve ever seen one,” another agreed.
“This man is constantly being underscored,” added another.
“We must keep voting so he stays at the top! Robert deserves the mirror ball ?,” another Dancing With the Stars fan wrote.
