Ryan Roth wins at-large Greeley City Council seat in landslide

Ryan Roth has made a career out of his ability to effectively deliver a message.

But, during the past several months, he has aimed to spend more of his time receiving messages rather than merely delivering them.

With the intent to listen to the community about the issues that matter most to them, Roth received a lion’s share of the vote in his race for a vacant at-large Greeley City Council seat.

Through the first couple rounds of results in Tuesday night’s election, he garnered 54.4% (8,503 votes) to defeat fellow candidates Rachelle Tabor (4,721, 30.2%) and Antonio Molina-Haro (2,409, 15.4%).

“Humbling and honoring,” Roth said, in describing what the decisive election outcome meant to him. “We ran a very good campaign. I feel like we did the things we needed to do. We listened to so many community members about their concerns, about their worries. And I just feel like we were able to collect those things. … Really, people just want to be seen, heard and understood.”

Roth, 48, will be sworn in Nov. 18 for a four-year term.

He has lived in Greeley for the past 30 years, and he earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Northern Colorado with a double major in journalism/mass communication and speech communication/human communication in 1999.

He is a public relations/events coordinator for ALLO Fiber for Colorado. He has previously served as a financial advisor at several firms.

He has served on a variety of nonprofit boards, including the Boys and Girls Clubs of Weld County Blue Door Society, Habitat for Humanity selection committee and the Jobs of Hope executive board.

Roth is filling the at-large seat currently occupied by Brett Payton, who is vacating his seat because of a term limit.

At-large council members represent all Greeley residents, unlike other council members who represent established wards within the city. Melissa McDonald occupies the other at-large seat with a term that ends in 2027.

As he begins his career in politics, Roth said he plans to use his experience serving on numerous boards to help propel the seven-seat council into the same general direction within a diverse community with many, competing viewpoints.

“One thing I learned while serving on a multitude of boards in our community is, you have to build consensus with a variety of viewpoints,” he said. “That will be my goal, to make sure other council members have their voice, get to bring their feelings to council, then, ultimately, making the best decision possible for the constituents of Greeley.”
