ONTARIO, N.Y. — Voters in Ontario are selecting their next district attorney in a closely watched race. Assistant District Attorney Jason MacBride upset incumbent District Attorney Jim Ritts by just 103 votes in the June primary. Ritts was first elected in 2017.
Ritts remains on the ballot as a Conservative, but he retired in October. If re-elected, he intends to retire again, allowing Gov. Kathy Hochul to appoint a temporary replacement until a special election is held.
As of 9:50 p.m., MacBride leads with 2,664 votes, while Ritts has 814 votes.
If Republican nominee MacBride wins, he will take over amid a staffing crisis. Only two of about a dozen assistant district attorneys are expected to stay.
This transition comes ahead of the murder trials of seven people accused of killing transgender man Sam Nordquist.
