A Chicago restaurant owner is opening his doors to serve free hot meals to help people impacted by SNAP benefit cuts in the city’s North Lawndale neighborhood.

Quentin Love spent Tuesday morning cooking in the kitchen of his restaurant as his staff prepared to hand out hot meals for free for the first time this week. The plates consist of chicken, Jamaican steamed cabbage and more.

“The labor of love right now is to make sure everybody in Chicago gets food,” said Love, the owner and chef of The SoulFood Lounge near 16th Street and Hamlin Avenue.

Love is now calling on other restaurant owners to band together to help Chicagoans impacted by SNAP cuts and address an even bigger problem.

“That’s the call to action for everybody,” he said. “All restaurants gotta be all-hands-on-deck so we can get past this food insecurity piece at this time.”

The Marine veteran opened his global soul food fusion restaurant three years ago along with Tiffany Burrell.

“We need to make an impact,” Burrell said. “We need to show everyone that they have someone to lean on, and that’s basically what we’re here to do.”

People started lining up hours before the doors opened at noon. Many of them rely on SNAP benefits to get by, and they told NBC Chicago they know this meal comes from a place of love, kindness and empathy.

“It’s helping me real good, and I appreciate everything that they’re trying to do for us,” said Lind Mitchell, who received a hot meal for her family.

“I love it. He’s good, he’s a good man for doing this, helping people out in a time of needs—he’s great,” said Robert Williams from the city’s Austin neighborhood.

As some Chicagoans wait for the SNAP funding, they’re grateful for this generosity. So far the restaurant has raised more than $4,000 for the mission here.

“We’re all in this together. We’re all one big happy family, and we all must get involved 100 percent,” said Love.

Love said the restaurant will serve hot meals for free every Tuesday from noon until 3 p.m. The owners plan to do this for as long as the need persists and said will expand to their second location in Beverly if they have to.
