Pittsford voters weigh personal politics and national issues in race for town supervisor

PITTSFORD, N.Y. — The race for town supervisor in Pittsford has become a focal point of local politics. Incumbent Bill Smith, who has held the position since 2014, is facing a challenge from Cathy Koshykar, a town board member for more than five years.

News10NBC’s Erin Mahon was at the Pittsford Community Library, where many voters shared their thoughts on the race. While some planned to vote along party lines, others said the race prompted them to research before heading to the polls.

“I think honestly the personal politics. Everybody’s talking about it on all these online forums,” said Eli Lebo.

Last week, News10NBC went to Pittsford to talk to businesses who got anonymous letters in response to campaign signs up in front of their shops.

Lebo said she noticed discussions about the race on Facebook and other local groups, which influenced her decision-making process.

“I see people talking on all of these Facebook groups for Pittsford and like my HOA and everything about like hey, what people do in their personal lives shouldn’t affect it. And I’m like honestly, I think it should,” Lebo said.

Lebo said researching the candidate’s personal and professional lives decided her vote. Others, like Dan Mulcahy say national issues are at play in this race.

“Well, I think people are voting locally with the national issues in mind,” said Mulcahy. “So if you have a perspective of like what’s going on at the national level, you’ll probably lean to candidates in that party.”

Local issues such as zoning, real estate development, and the potential introduction of weed shops are affecting voter decisions. Some residents want Pittsford to remain unchanged, while others welcome potential changes.

From observations, those favoring change tend to support Koshykar, while those preferring stability back Smith. The voter sentiment appeared evenly mixed earlier in the afternoon Tuesday.
