Anthony Hopkins Reveals Heartbreaking Truth About His Failed Marriages in New Memoir

Anthony Hopkins is opening up about his past relationships in his new memoir, We Did OK, Kid — offering rare insight into the heartbreak, infidelity, and lessons learned from his two failed marriages.

The Silence of the Lambs star, 87, details the downfall of his marriages to Jennifer Lynton and Petronella Barker.

"Petronella and I were very different from each other, but we were in love," he wrote. "We tried to rally for the sake of the child we were about to have, but it was no use. The marriage was a disaster, full of tensions and jealousies."

Hopkins wed Barker in 1966, recalling, "What followed were the worst two years of my life."

According to Hopkins, his constant work schedule caused resentment in their marriage. It all came to a boiling point after he returned home from filming in Scotland, he explained.

"Exhausted after endless days on set and the long trip home, I set down my suitcases in the hall. Before my coat was off, Petronella was mocking me," he wrote. "In that moment, I was filled with such revulsion that I became afraid for both myself and her. Without a word, I walked past her into Abigail’s room, where she lay sleeping."

Hopkins claimed he said goodbye to the infant and walked back out the door.

"I’d been with Petronella for two years. I’d almost left many times. But that was the night I knew I had to get out for good," he explained. "Otherwise, God knows what the consequences would have been."

Hopkins Admits to Cheating on Second Wife

Following their split, Hopkins met second wife Jennifer Lynton in December 1969. While their marriage lasted nearly 20 years, he admitted to cheating on Lynton multiple times.

"She turned a blind eye to whatever I was up to. It was only years later that she knew about my infidelities," Hopkins wrote. "I don’t know whether she took a lover too. I rather hope she did. I would never blame her for it."

Hopkins went on to say that Lynton "deserved better," adding, "I did not make it easy on her. She’d caught a tiger by the tail."

Hopkins and Lynton divorced in 2002. He married his current wife, Stella Arroyave, the following year.

Hopkins' memoir, We Did OK, Kid, hit bookstores Tuesday, November 4.
