Arizona coach Tommy Lloyd: ‘Jaden Bradley gets no love’

Arizona men’s basketball coach Tommy Lloyd made sure to talk about the often overlooked Jaden Bradley after the Wildcats’ win over the Florida Gators on Monday.

Much of the national attention went to Koa Peat for his highlight-reel dunks and game-high 30 points, but Bradley was largely the reason Arizona knocked off the defending champions.

Lloyd was originally asked by Andy Katz about Peat during the on-court postgame interview, but the Arizona coach wanted Bradley to get his flowers, a sentiment he’s shared for the past two seasons as well.

“How about Jaden Bradley tonight?” Lloyd told Katz. “That dude gets no love. And he doesn’t need any love. But he came out and he kicked some ass today.”

Bradley shot 9-for-14 from the field and had career-high 27 points in the opener against Florida.

Bradley was named to the Oscar Robertson Trophy preseason watch list on Monday, which recognizes the top player in college basketball. However, he was left off every other preseason watchlist, including the Bob Cousy Award preseason list for the nation’s top point guard and the Preseason All-Big 12 Team.

“The Hall of Fame is awesome, but how in the world do they not have Jaden Bradley as one of the top 20 point guards in the country? You guys know, I don’t mess with these lists that much, but JB and I talk about it a little bit,” Lloyd said during the postgame press conference.

“JB is a guy that he doesn’t need anything extra. He doesn’t take up any extra space in the room that he has to. He’s always leaving room for his teammates to be special, and at the end of the day, he’s just a get it done type of guy. I know there’s add ons to that list, but if there’s any way this guy’s not one of the top two or three point guards in the country, I mean, I’ve been doing this for a while, and then they don’t make them much better than this. He was amazing today.”

As Arizona fell behind by 12 twice in the first half, the Wildcats turned to the experienced Bradley, playing in his 111th collegiate game.

“We just knew Florida was a great team, so we tried not to panic when we got down,” Bradley said. “We trusted in each other, trusted in the system, two, three ball screens, and we just took what they gave us. We just trusted each other, and we ended up getting that lead.”

The senior added 15 points in second half, including 11 straight Arizona points to give the Wildcats their biggest lead of the game.

“He’s an experienced player. He’s a winner,” Lloyd said of Bradley’s second-half performance. “And we trust him. And I know we’re gonna (win) a lot of games with him. He’s a great free throw shooter. He’s a great decision maker and another thing we say, ‘He’s got big cajónes.'”

Bradley also shot 9-for-10 at the line on Monday, the most free throws he’s made in a Wildcats uniform, as Arizona only attempted five 3-pointers in the game.

Arizona shoots fewest amount of 3s in more than a decade

The five 3s Arizona shot were the fewest since also shooting 2-for-5 in a 73-50 win at California on Jan. 24, 2015.

“That’s not totally the game plan, but it’s just kind of how they’re guarding you sometimes,” Lloyd said. “But if you shoot five 3s and you can attempt 38 free throws … that puts a lot of pressure on a defense, because you know what happens when you shoot a free throw? They fouled you, and those fouls add up, and then they get deeper into the bench.

“Maybe guys, if they are playing, they’re a little more tentative, they can’t be as aggressive. There’s lots of ways to win a game, and I know a trend is shooting 3s. I don’t think we’re going to shoot five 3s a game. I mean, obviously I’d like to be in the 20s, if they’re the right threes. And I think we’ll get there over time.”
