“It depends on what level he wants to play at, but if I were Jack Wilshere and I know it is League One, I would be calling him non-stop to come and play for his old mate and help that group at Luton,” Sherwood told Sky Sports. However, he added: “But he himself may be aiming much higher and probably is.”

Oxlade-Chamberlain has already turned down a number of lucrative offers from abroad, as his priority is to remain in England. “A number of clubs are looking at him closely,” said transfer expert Pete O'Rourke. “He has an excellent CV, he played for Arsenal and Liverpool, he is a Champions League and Premier League winner from his time at Liverpool.”

O'Rourke added: “There is interest from clubs in the Premier League, Championship, League One and across Europe, with Leeds and Birmingham among them. I am certain he will be ready to return to England after several years away and I expect his future to move forward soon.”
