The program’s funding has expired, and although federal judges have ordered the White House to come up with an immediate plan to keep the program going, likely by using contingency funds, it’s uncertain when or if SNAP participants might see the benefits they were expecting to receive in November.(As this story was being published, the White House announced it would only make partial SNAP payments in November.)In the meantime, some restaurants have stepped up to help ensure people in need in their community won’t go hungry. This past weekend, the taco chain was offering a Community Support Special, consisting of one beef or bean burrito and one Jr. Potato Olés, free to anyone in need. It’s unclear if the chain will repeat that promotion, so watch their website and social media channels for updates.

Chicken Salad Chick (locations in multiple states)

Several of the chain’s locations, including some in Florida and others in Colorado, have announced that they will be giving out free kids’ meals until SNAP benefits are restored. The chain’s stores are franchises, so promotions and participation can vary by location.

Visit any location and ask for “Adult SNAP Meal” or “Kids SNAP Meal” or both—no questions asked—until SNAP benefits are restored.

Mikiko Mochi Donuts (several locations in the Portland, OR area)

Show your EBT card to receive a free donut and coffee.

This restaurant, established by the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation, operates on a “community restaurant” model, and there are no prices on the menu. Those who are able to make a donation can pay it forward to fund meals for others. Anyone unable to pay is welcome to have a meal and find out about ways to volunteer if they are able to do so.

Burger Monger (three locations in FL)

Ask for a “MongerBag” and you’ll receive a free to-go bagged lunch for each child with you—no purchase required, until SNAP benefits are reinstated.

Visit either location between 11:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. and show your EBT card to receive a free lunch through November.

Toasted Bagels & Coffee (several locations in the Seattle area)

This coffee shop will provide a meal (sandwich and a drink) to anyone losing SNAP benefits, with the cost partly funded by the chain’s online Neighbor’s Tab program.

More Businesses Offering Meals for SNAP Participants

Many individual or single-location restaurants across the country have also announced various promotions to help SNAP participants. A few examples:

A heartwarming trend: some restaurants—like Spread Kitchen in Sonoma, CA and The Burnt Norton in Wilkes-Barre, PA—are coordinating “kindness walls,” where people can prepay for a meal (either by phone, online or in person) that will then be available to anyone who needs it.

Several of the major food delivery services have also announced initiatives to help those impacted by the SNAP situation.

Instacart is offering active SNAP customers 50% off their next grocery order—up to a $50 discount—and is also launching online food drives for hundreds of food bank partners and agencies nationwide.Gopuffis offering $50 worth of groceries for free (broken into two $25 credits during the month of November) to customers who have a SNAP EBT card connected to their Gopuff account, or who add their SNAP EBT card.DoorDash is waiving delivery and service fees for 300,000 grocery orders for SNAP recipients; waiving merchant fees for all 300+ Project DASH partner food banks, food pantries, and community organizations nationwide throughout November; and donating food and household essentials from DashMart locations to local food banks in affected communities. 

Food Banks and Other Resources

Food banks are also a possible resource for those affected by the SNAP situation. In some cases, restaurants have announced plans to donate a portion of their sales to food banks or similar organizations.
