MLBits: Insufferable Glasnow Interview, 2026 Power Rankings, Opt Out Decisions, More

MLB NEWS — This season, the Chicago Cubs had SIX Gold Glove finalists: Nico Hoerner, Pete Crow-Armstrong, Ian Happ, Matt Shaw, Matthew Boyd, and Carson Kelly. And when the winners were announced last night, three Cubs took home some hardware: PCA won his first (but obviously not his last), Nico Hoerner grabbed his second (feels crazy that there haven’t been more), and Ian Happ continued to clean up in left field with his fourth consecutive Gold Glove award.

Their three wins are the most of any team in MLB this season (and tied for the most the Cubs have had in any year). It was also the first time the Cubs have had two outfielders win Gold Gloves in the same season. PCA will now turn his attention to the Platinum Glove award, which will be announced this Friday. He seems deserving to me.

In any case, I bring this up to share Jordan Bastian’s article from MLB.com, where he dives deep into the Cubs’ defensive prowess this season in light of their impressive showing in the Gold Glove race(s).

Bastian has a load of interesting stats and facts, as well as comments from Jed Hoyer, Nico Hoerner, PCA, and Ian Happ. Brett also dove into the Cubs Gold Glovery earlier today.

In any case, it really was a crazy impressive year defensively for this Cubs team, especially when you consider that their six nominations didn’t even include Dansby Swanson, who was perfectly excellent at shortstop, as he always is. We don’t need a nomination to tell us that.

Now let’s talk about some other stuff from around the league.

    2026 MLB Power Rankings

There’s almost no real reason to dive into the 2026 MLB Power Rankings on November 3, 2025 … when literally the entire offseason lies ahead of us. But I gotta say, when I saw the headline at The Athletic, I was kind of curious. So I figured you might be too.

I’m not going to share the entire thing – you can go check it out yourself – but I do want to talk about the top of the list and the Cubs’ ranking.

    MLB Power Rankings Top-5

Dodgers Blue Jays Yankees Brewers Mariners

    You serious, Clark?

I have no issue with the Dodgers kicking things off, especially if they go out and grab Kyle Tucker, as one early rumor suggested. And I think it’s probably fair to guess the Yankees will be there, too. But the rest of this is just … come on.

I understand that the Blue Jays just held their own in the World Series against the Dodgers, but are we really expecting them to be the second-best team in baseball after potentially losing Bo Bichette, Chris Bassitt, Max Scherzer, Shane Bieber, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, and Serathony Domínguez? How much of this is based on Trey Yesavage’s incredible (but short-lived) postseason success?

More importantly, get the HELL out of here with the Brewers.

I know they’re always better than we think, even when they lose key pieces. But I don’t think enough national people saw them up close like we did this season. That winning streak, that version of Andrew Vaughn, the way things played out early with Jacob Misiorowski … it’s not happening like that again. And if they do trade Freddy Peralta while losing Brandon Woodruff, Jose Quintana, and Erick Fedde, they’ll have some big work to do in the rotation, too.

I am NOT NOT NOT saying they won’t be a playoff contender. They will be. They won 97 games and are clearly an impressive organization. I just think ranking them fourth is a little cowardly. Like you couldn’t possibly go lower because of their win total, when we know they over-performed by pretty much every conceivable … I just hate the Brewers, okay?

The Cubs come in at Number 8, by the way, which strikes me as a fair placement. Here’s what Stephen J. Nesbitt had to say about them:

The Cubs’ lone season with Tucker before he hit free agency ended with Chicago’s bats going quiet in Game 5 of the NLDS. The Cubs have the pieces in place to be a contender again in 2026. To challenge the Brewers for the division crown, the Cubs will need a healthy return from starter Justin Steele and a bullpen stocked with swing-and-miss arms. They have several top position player prospects primed to make an impact in the majors next season, making it less likely that club ownership will pay the price to acquire (or reacquire) a middle-of-the-order bat this offseason.

The Cardinals rank 25th, and I really love that. White Sox are 29th. Rockies dead last. That all seems correct to me.

What a Lame Perspective, Tyler Glasnow

“If you can’t beat em, join em baby.” -Tyler Glasnow pic.twitter.com/izESPupswU

    — Talkin’ Baseball (@TalkinBaseball_) November 2, 2025

I don’t know why I care what Tyler Glasnow has to say (maybe it’s because I’m mad the Cubs couldn’t complete their rumored trade for him a couple of years ago … or because I’m jealous that he quickly signed an extension with the Dodgers thereafter). But when I saw this, my eyes rolled all the way to the back of my head, down my back, and out my butt:

Snell: “We chased this (with the Rays) in 2020, we lost to this team … and now we’re on this team.”

Glasnow: “It’s incredible … IF YOU CAN’T BEAT ‘EM, JOIN ‘EM, BABY!”

*insufferable tone, awkward high-five, smug smiles.*

Listen, I am not in any way one of the people who believe the Dodgers are ruining baseball with the way that they spend. It’s not their job to change the rules; it’s their job to try to win at any cost. And they do a fantastic job within the current framework.

Likewise, I will never lament a player taking the most money available, even if that’s from the Dodgers.

But there is something just so insufferable about the way Glasnow shamelessly (and unwittingingly?) plays into everything a lot of baseball fans fear is ruining the sport. I mean that comment, right there, is a big part of why there *is* going to be a lockout in 2027.

Not trying to be soft here, it just felt like loser mentality to be like “Yeah, I couldn’t win anywhere else, so here I am!” Like, okay. Cool.

    Opt-Outs Across Baseball

This morning, two premium, top-tier closers (Robert Suarez and Edwin Diaz) opted out of their contracts with the Padres and Mets, respectively. They joined Alex Bregman in opting out and beefing up the free agent class this winter.

But they’re not the only ones who made big decisions.

Brandon Woodruff declined his mutual option with the Brewers, becoming a free agent. Pete Alonso opted out of his contract with the Mets, becoming a free agent. Cody Bellinger opted out of his contract with the Yankees, becoming a free agent. Lucas Giolito declined his end of a mutual option with the Red Sox, becoming a free agent. Ha-Seong Kim opted out of his deal with the Braves, becoming a free agent.

I don’t think there’s going to be much Cubs interest on those bulleted players, though it’s not totally inconceivable, I suppose. The Cubs obviously have had interest in Pete Alonso in the past, they twice signed Cody Bellinger, and Craig Counsell was a big part of Brandon Woodruff’s career. Again, I don’t expect any of those to matter, but just FYI.
