(QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- A Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officer is under investigation after a video, that's now been shared across social media, shows him throwing a teenage girl to the ground as she was reportedly punching people outside West Charlotte High School.
Family claims the officer's actions resulted in a brain bleed and emotional trauma.
Video of the fight shows the CMPD officer with a Taser out. He's seen picking up a girl as she's punching someone and slams her to the ground.
She appears to be unconscious as he puts her hands behind her back.
"The normal reaction is, 'That was a lot of force to be used on a teenager,'" said Dr. Roy Taylor, a police procedure expert with more than 40 years of law enforcement experience.
Taylor said the investigation will look at everything that happened during the fight, including police body camera footage and other bystander videos, to determine first whether a use of force was justified, then if that force was excessive.
"There were other alternatives than to pick her up and throw her down, but that's hindsight, and we won't really know if he made a good decision until we get more information," Taylor said.
The girl in the video is Kenadie Cathey.
Queen City News spoke to her father, Keai Cathey, who said she'll take virtual classes the rest of the year as she recovers from a brain bleed and "profound emotional trauma."
He shared a statement that said in part, "The conduct of the officer involved was a gross failure of duty...We must demand immediate answers and policy changes from the CMPD...We are not asking for justice; we are demanding it."
Cathey said Charlotte-Mecklenburg School leaders have been helpful and understanding in how they're supporting his daughter academically.
Message sent to West Charlotte High School families on Friday, Oct. 31:
"West Charlotte Families, this is Principal Cook. I am reaching out to inform you of a fight that took place on our bus lot during dismissal today, a video of which you may have seen circulating on social media. We understand this footage may be disturbing. We have contacted the families of all students involved.
School leadership is aware and this incident is being investigated by both Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and CMPD. We will provide updates as we are able.
Every student deserves to feel and be safe at school. The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our top priority. Thank you for your understanding and continued support of West Charlotte High School."
