‘Bewitched’ Getting a Modern Reboot With a Dramatic Twist

A brand-new version of one of TV’s most beloved supernatural sitcoms is brewing.

FOX has officially put in development a reimagining of the classic series Bewitched, Deadline reports. The hourlong drama comes from writer and executive producer Judalina Neira (The Boys, Daisy Jones & the Six) and producer Doug Robinson (The Goldbergs, Rules of Engagement), with Sony Pictures Television producing.

The original Bewitched (1964–1972) starred Elizabeth Montgomery as Samantha, a witch who marries a mortal man, Darrin, and tries to live a normal suburban life despite the chaos her magical family brings.

In this new “heartfelt” reimagining, the premise will still follow Samantha and Darrin’s love story — she’s a witch, he’s human — but the series will expand the emotional and cultural divide between their two worlds. According to Deadline, “they’ll have to navigate their disapproving parents, walk a tightrope of cultural clashes, and bridge the divides between their families and worlds.”

The new hourlong drama format marks a major shift from previous Bewitched reboot attempts, which all envisioned the series as a traditional half-hour comedy.

    Who’s Behind the New ‘Bewitched’

Neira is one of television’s most versatile rising talents. She’s an executive producer on The Boys (which is headed into its fifth and final season) and previously worked on Gen V, The Horror of Dolores Roach, Daisy Jones & the Six, The Morning Show and The Flash.

Robinson, meanwhile, is Sony TV’s longest-tenured producer, with credits that include The Goldbergs and For Life. The new Bewitched will be co-produced by Sony TV and Fox Entertainment, expanding an already strong partnership between the two companies that also includes Doc, Accused and Alert.

    The Legacy of ‘Bewitched’

Created by Sol Saks and originally executive produced by Harry Ackerman, Bewitched ran for eight seasons on ABC from 1964 to 1972. The show remains one of the most iconic sitcoms of all time, blending comedy, romance and a touch of the supernatural to explore suburban life and gender roles of its era.

In addition to several failed reboot attempts over the years, there’s also a separate Bewitched project still in active development — a live-action family series centered on pre-teen Tabitha, Samantha’s daughter, from Sony Pictures Television Kids and Flying Bark Productions.

Whether the new FOX series goes to pilot or full-series order remains to be seen, but fans of the magical Montgomery classic will be keeping their wands crossed.
