Ryan Seacrest is mourning the death of his father, Gary Lee Seacrest, who died last week after a long battle with prostate cancer.
The Wheel of Fortune and American Idol host shared the news on Instagram on Oct.31 with a heartfelt caption. He accompanied the post with family photos and wrote that his father is now "free of any pain and suffering."
In a recent episode of his On Air with Ryan Seacrest podcast, he opened up about the death of his father and his final words.
Alongside his mother, Constance Marie Zullinger, his sister, Meredith, and her husband, Jimmy Leach, they "watched every last moment" as they gathered in Atlanta and stood by his bedside for several days.
"In his last hours, as we just sat there, he weakly mumbled that he loved us. And I remember him saying, I can see him laying in the bed. I can see his mouth slowly moving to the words, 'I love this family'," stated Ryan.
He goes on to add that while his father barely had his eyes open, he looked over at Seacrest and said, "Take care of your mom."
"And he said to my sister and to Jimmy, 'take care of Flora, my granddaughter,' and then literally a few seconds later, he closed his eyes and he said, 'I’ve got to go.'" recounted Seacrest.
While Seacrest has kept his father's cancer battle relatively quiet, in July 2025, he publicly announced his father's cancer had returned more aggressively. Gary had also landed in the ICU after contracting pneumonia during his treatment and slowly recovered.
Seacrest also spoke of the harsh effects of the cancer treatment and revealed that his father "knew" it was time.
"He knew. He was at peace. He said everything he wanted to say to us. He left at peace," he said.
