A Fun and Weird Caleb Williams Comp Emerges, How Coaching Won That Game, Monangai, Brittain and Other Bears Bullets

There is so much good stuff I want to get to that I don’t want to waste time with an elaborate intro.

I’m still in awe when I think about Colston Loveland’s performance on Sunday. Getting a game ball should be just the tip of the iceberg. One of the sentiments I saw shared in a wide swath of places is that Sunday’s Bears-Bengals game was emblematic of Cincy’s season. Thinking about it that way had me thinking about how that game was a snap shot of what the Bears were at this time last year. Seeing Chicago’s football team go from a squad that finds ways to lose games to one that escapes from would-be losses with victories is a testament to how important coaching change can be. I’m so glad Ben Johnson signed onto be the Bears head coach instead of choosing the Raiders or whatever other teams were banging down his door.

That was a huge win for the Bears. In addition to being a potential narrative changer because the team showed that it can overcome adversity, it also places them in the thick of the playoff hunt. Chicago’s playoff odds would have dipped to 16 percent had Cincinnati won. But that miraculous win bumped their postseason probability from 25 percent before Week 9 kicked off to 38 percent. There is still a long way to go in this season. And while I’m not sure if this team is good enough to be a playoff qualifier, this group has played its way into the conversation after eight games. That sure as heck beats the alternative. Bears quarterback Caleb Williams continues to remind me of Jake Plummer in that he plays the game in a way where opponents should fear giving him too much time to operate in late-game situations when Chicago is trailing. It’s the mobility, arm talent, and knack for making something out of nothing in crunch time that keeps the comp fresh in my mind. Caleb now has four 4th-quarter comebacks and three game-winning drives under his belt in his first 25 games as a pro. It’s impressive when you consider how much heavy lifting he has had to do from a development standpoint in his first two years in the league. Mandatory Credit: Joseph Maiorana-Imagn Images Give Williams credit for this: Engineering that late-game touchdown saved the Bears from a potential spiral game. Losing back-to-back road games against a backup quarterback and a 40-year-old who spent the week leading up to game-day on the injury report with a bum shoulder is the type of thing that would’ve led this fanbase to crash out. And I fear the that the team would have been at risk of coming apart at the seams. Instead, they rallied around each other and snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. I’m so used to it being the other way around that I’m going to try to make sure I relish the win. Victories like that don’t come around often for Bears fans. My favorite under-the-radar part of the Bears’ Week 9 win against the Bengals is that we are continuing to see this team build an offensive identity as a team that runs the ball with multiple ball-carriers, uses misdirection and trickery to throw defenders off their mark, and creates explosive plays with a variety of playmakers. But none of that happens without the ability to play bully ball in the trenches. And Chicago’s run-blocking has been kicking butt in recent weeks. Oh, what I wouldn’t give to see that trend continue.

Another random favorite thing that happened on Sunday: Blitzing Joe Flacco on the Hail Mary throw. Forcing the issue, pushing Flacco off his spot, and making an injured quarterback wing it down field with pressure coming his way was the perfect way to handle that last gasp attempt from Cincy’s QB. And it is a surefire way to avoid a Fail Mary sequel. Chicago’s defense didn’t have a good day at the office, but Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen deserves a tip of the cap. Weird Joe Flacco games vs. the Bears are normal, I suppose:

Anyone notice how crazy every game with Joe Flacco is when he plays the Bears?2013 Bears 23, Ravens 20, OT, massive weather delay when the skies turned purple2017 Bears 27, Ravens 24, OT, Ravens two ST TDs, Adrian Amos 90 yard INT TD2019 Bears 19, Broncos 17, Broncos take…

    — Bill Zimmerman (@BillTZimmerman) November 3, 2025 Those games, coupled with Flacco’s elimination of my alma mater in a playoff game I attended as a student, made watching him lose on Sunday feel so darn cathartic. Big plays (as defined within this post) are runs that go for 10+ yards and receptions that go for 20+ yards. The Beas had six different players generate explosive plays in Sunday’s win. And in the case of DJ Moore, he had an explosive run (what might’ve been the craziest TD had it not been for Colston Loveland’s game-winner) and and explosive reception. I enjoy watching Kyle Monangai run the ball. He still needs to work on pass protection. And I need him to study some D’Andre Swift tape because I think it could help him position himself better as a receiver out of the backfield. But still … watching Monangai run downhill, churn his legs, move the pile, and fall forward makes for an aesthetically pleasing viewing experience. This isn’t the Sonic and Knuckles Show that the Detroit Lions have with Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery, but I have faith in Ben Johnson getting the most out of his tandem backs in Chicago. That is the kind of factoid that might make some folks want to hold onto late-round picks with the 2025 NFL Trade Deadline coming tomorrow. In case you were wondering where Khalil Herbert is, the former Bears back is on the New York Jets. Herbert has spent time with three teams this seaso, signing with the Indianapolis Colts and spending training camp with them before landing on the Seattle Seahawks’ practice squad ahead of his pivot to New York. Life as a running back in the NFL can change in the blink of an eye.

Three cheers for Brittain Brown! A seventh-round pick by the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022, Brown played his first offensive snap ever on Sunday. It was out of necessity because D’Andre Swift and Roschon Johnson were out of the lineup. But Brown made the most of the time on the field by running for 37 yards on five carries. That 22-yard touchdown run was a treat. Facts I need time to digest: Caleb Williams (2 catches, 22 yards, 1 TD) had a better receiving day than Rome Odunze (3 targets, 0 catches). Spin zone: I am going to take it as a good sign that Caleb Williams posted a 3 TD-0 INT game with a 114.8 passer rating on a day in which wide receiver Rome Odunze had 0 receptions on 3 targets.
