Drake Maye had the perfect game on Sunday.
When hall of famer Dean Smith was coaching, and his team was favored and having a bad game, he said that a one-point win would be perfect.
The win, of course, was important for his team to continue building its record to get a high seed and make a run in the NCAA Tournament. But Smith needed something to get their attention during practice before the next game, especially those kids who could have played a lot better.
That way, Smith could really coach, and he loved practice more than the games. After losses, he was hard on them to get their attention, but he knew which players were tough enough to be challenged, and others who needed to build their confidence.
I thought of that while watching Drake Maye play Sunday afternoon in the 1-point win over the Falcons. It wasn’t his best game for sure, but he still threw two touchdown passes and maintained that streak of 200-plus yards passing in every game this season.
Maye is clearly the best second-year quarterback in the NFL. Some pundits are already throwing his name around for MVP of the entire league, which is premature.
That is why I am glad he struggled some in leading the 7-2 Patriots to their 6th consecutive win to remain in first place in the AFC East. Maye’s two TD passes provided an early lead. But it was his fumble and a later interception that helped Atlanta get back in the game and only lost it in regulation when by missing what would have been the tying extra point.
New England never trailed, but the Falcons made a late push that could have easily turned into a victory if the game had gone to overtime.
“I’ve got to play better for this team down the road,” Maye said after the 24-23 victory. “I think it’s tough where you win and you can feel in that locker room that these guys know we can play better.”
He touched on his youth and the progress ahead of him.
“I think just trying to enjoy these wins, it’s tough to win in my short career in this league. You’ve just got to enjoy it when you get in the win column, enjoy getting another chance next week to face a good team on the road.”
That game is facing the 6-2 Tampa Bay Bucs, who are leading in their division and have star quarterback Baker Mayfield, who at Oklahoma was the first walk-on to ever win the Heisman trophy but did not do well with Cleveland, the team that drafted him into the NFL. After playing a season with the Panthers and Rams, he is now among the best quarterbacks in the league. Maye will have to return to a high level of play if his team can win that game in Tampa.
When Dean Smith used a one-point win to his advantage, good things usually followed.
