Manchester United transfer news: Sir Alex Ferguson names his worst Red Devils signing

During his era at Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson achieved what very few other managers in Europe have managed. He turned Manchester into a literal monster, which had no competition in the domestic competition and succeeded in Europe. During his time at Old Trafford, he led and brought many players, amongst whom were David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo, Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney.

One of history's best managers and a Manchester United legend, Sir Alex Ferguson, spent a beautiful part of his life in Manchester. He arrived at Old Trafford in November 1986, when the Red Devils were in 19th place out of 22 teams in the then First Division.

Ferguson left Aberdeen and brought with him players who later became key. Amongst them were Brian McClair, Steve Bruce and Mark Hughes. His appointment did not immediately bear fruit – it took almost four years until he won his first trophy with the team – the FA Cup.

He reached another trophy three years later, when he succeeded in the inaugural Premier League season. Ferguson worked at the club until 2013 and during that time managed to win another 12 titles, six European trophies, of which two were from the Champions League.

Today it is already a rarity when a manager lasts longer than five years and Ferguson's 27 years is truly admirable. During that time he brought lots of players and not all left a positive mark at the club.

One of his favourite routes in the transfer market was signing contracts based on performances delivered in prestigious international competitions.

Who was the renowned Scottish manager's worst signing?

For example, Bellion or Kleberson are amongst players with not particularly successful spells at Old Trafford. Nevertheless, he does not consider either of these players the worst.

Alex Ferguson admitted that he made his biggest mistake in his early days – specifically in 1988 he brought attacking midfielder Ralph Milne from Bristol City. Milne was a Scotland Under-21 international and had behind him brilliant performances at Scottish side Dundee United and helped Dundee with his four goals to the European Cup semi-final. He maintained form and in the 1986-87 season headed to Charlton, a month before the UEFA Cup final against Gothenburg (1-2).

Early fame and good performances led Milne astray and he increasingly fell into alcohol and gambling. Manager McLean did not spare criticism of the player's character. He did not stay long at Charlton, after 12 months he headed to third-tier Bristol City.

Here came improvement, for which he was rewarded with a transfer to Manchester United. In 27 matches he scored three goals, but that was all. Shortly afterwards he was transferred to the reserve team and played his final professional match at only 28 years old.

“The worst transfer I ever made? Ralph Milne. He only cost me £170,000, but people still reproach me for it,” admits one of the world's best managers. Milne's alcohol dependency caused problems not only in his football career, but also in his personal life. In 2013 he allegedly attacked his partner and their case went to court.

“At 6.30am he gets up and starts drinking cider, at 10 o'clock he goes to bed drunk. After another four hours he gets up and starts drinking again,” his partner claimed.

Milne died at the age of 54 in 2015. The cause was liver problems. In 2009, Milne was inducted into the Dundee United Hall of Fame.
