After Bumper cash reward, BCCI does partiality with India Women

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced a cash reward for India’s women’s team following their maiden World Cup triumph. However, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia stated that the board has not yet finalized whether a public celebration will take place to honor the historic achievement.

India’s women’s team secured their first-ever ICC ODI World Cup win with a 52-run victory over South Africa at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Sunday, November 2. The triumph has sparked talk of a celebratory parade, a gesture that has become customary after major cricketing victories.

Celebrations for India’s historic Women's World Cup win may take some time to materialize, as senior BCCI officials are currently occupied with ICC meetings in Dubai from November 4 to 7.

Speaking to IANS, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia stated that no victory parade has been finalized yet. He added that the board will take a call on any public celebration only after officials return from Dubai and are able to discuss plans in detail.

“Nothing like a victory parade is planned as of now," Saikia was quoted as saying to IANS while speaking from Mumbai airport. “I’m leaving for Dubai to attend the ICC meeting. Several officials are heading there as well, so once we return, we will plan accordingly."

BCCI Will Reward the Team With a Cash Award of Rs 51 crore - Devajit Saikia

Harmanpreet Kaur’s team etched their name alongside Australia (7), England (4), and New Zealand (1) in the elite list. The Women in Blue had suffered heartbreaking defeats in the 2005 and 2017 finals.

Devajit Saikia also announced that the board will award a ₹51 crore cash prize. The reward will be distributed among the players, support staff, and the national selectors as recognition for delivering India’s first-ever Women’s ODI World Cup title.

"As a token of appreciation, the BCCI will reward the Indian women's cricket team with a cash award of Rs 51 crore for winning the World Cup. It includes all the players, support staff and the national selection committee," Saikia said.

ICC Announced a Substantial Rise in Prize Money

The ICC had earlier announced a substantial rise in prize money. ICC Chairman Jay Shah confirmed that the champions would take home USD 4.48 million (about ₹42 crore), a major jump from the USD 1.32 million awarded to Australia in 2022. The 2023 men’s winners earned USD 4 million.

Deepti Sharma was named Player of the Tournament for her consistent all-round impact, finishing among the top performers with both bat and ball. Shafali Verma, who scored 87 and took two key wickets in the final, received the Player of the Match award.

South Africa’s captain, Laura Wolvaardt, ended the tournament as the leading run-scorer. The right-handed batter scored 571 runs at an impressive average of 71.38 and a strike rate of 98.79, including two centuries and three half-centuries.
