Some wardrobe staples never go out of style. Whether that's a barn jacket, wide leg jeans or cargo pants, some classic favorites remain on-trend year after year. Now that we're heading into the colder months, it's also time to think about seasonal hats. And one style that's functional and versatile is the beanie! Even if you don't traditionally love the style of a beanie or thought it never looked good on you, celebrity stylist Mickey Freemansays there are some key ways to pull one off. In fact, he has a few thoughts on the absolute best ways to wear a beanie this season."Wearing beanies isn't for the fashion faint of heart," he tells Parade. "They can look amazing when styled correctly, but can appear awkward and pretentious if missed." If simpler outfits like a button-down and leather pants are more your speed, there's a beanie to pair with that! But, even if you like to be more adventurous in the fashion department, Freeman also says there are plenty of unique styles out there that you can play around with, too. No matter what mood you find yourself in, there’s a cool weather beanie just waiting to be worn. You just need to know how to wear a beanie first. So, for all the ways Freeman loves styling a beanie, keep scrolling. Freeman explains that a beanie is a versatile, cozy, snug and close-fitting hat without a brim that offers both functionality and style. "Typically made of acrylic, wool or fleece with a knitted or crocheted texture, beanies aren't just a streetwear trend or a fall/winter staple; they have become the ultimate symbol of laidback coolness, reigning supreme season after season in urban fashion," he shares. "Especially among youth, including skaters, punk enthusiasts, hip-hop fans and athletes."While he stresses that beanies can be worn year-round, they are a particularly good staple to invest in come fall and winter because they're warm and comfortable for the season.Related: 7 Best Ways to Style a Bandana at Any Age, According to a Celebrity Stylist
Are Beanies Still in Style?
According to Freeman, beanies never go out of style! They're an item that can be worn year after year without being "dated." Even though this is true, he also says that the style is on-trend at the moment, anyway. "Already reflected in the 2025 collections by fashion brands and designers like The Row, Bottega Veneta, Coach, Armani, Issey Miyake, Hermès, Moschino, Valentino, Louis Vuitton, Alberta Ferretti, Rabanne and Burberry to name a few, beanies are being reimagined with interesting colorways and materials, including leather, lurex, shearling, mohair, brushed wool/alpaca, feathers and treated faux fur," he shares. "These brands featured a variety of chic beanie designs, ranging from understated staples with silver hardware (The Row) to playful oversized fits with decorative pins (Coach) and luxurious knit beanies (like Burberry's duck beanie)."
This will depend on your personal preference. While some like their beanie to cover their ears for warmth, there's no rule that says it has to. Freeman adds that you should take into account factors like climate, style, material and design. "For warmth, a beanie can fit snugly over your ears, or just above them for a more stylish approach, maybe even sitting right over your parietal lobe for an edge," he says. "Both literally and figuratively!"Related: 7 Best Ways To Style a Vest in 2025, According to a Celebrity Stylist
Where Should a Beanie Sit on Your Head?
Like ear coverage, where a beanie sits on your head is entirely up to you. Freeman says that you should consider whether you're going for functionality, style or both when deciding where your beanie should sit. Placing a beanie farther back on your head will look stylish, but may not keep your head as protected from the elements. Sitting it further forward around the hairline will help keep your head warmer and still look stylish. "A beanie pulled down just above the brow line is a great way to hide a bad hair day while also keeping your head and ears warm in the cold," he adds.Related: 7 Best Petite Trench Coat Styles for Women, According to a Celebrity Stylist
There are so many ways to style your hair with a beanie—the limit does not exist! However, if you're looking to keep it out of your face while wearing one, and you have long hair, Freeman says he's a huge fan of wearing two pigtails (braided or unbraided) peeking out from the bottom of the beanie. "I'm also excited about beanies made from fun and interesting materials and textures like tweed, boucle, denim, nylon, polyamide, terry and, of course, leather," he shares. How you style your hair with a beanie is also based on personal preference, but the material of the beanie could change how you decide to style it.? 7 Best Ways To Wear a Beanie, According to a Celebrity Stylist
1. A military-inspired look
Freeman personally loves a military-inspired look with a beanie. There are so many ways to play this, but camouflage print can pair nicely with a black or grey beanie. He says a beanie looks even more elevated with a subtle military style. "[It] pairs beautifully with military staples like trench coats, heavy knit sweaters, cargo pants (leather or khaki), pleated skirts over trousers (leather or wool) and high heeled or platform boots," he adds.
2. With a tailored suit and shoulder pads
A tailored suit looks so chic with a beanie—especially one that's a little different, like this one, which has a gauzy lace design. Freeman says there are a few ways you can take this look to the next level."Wearing a maximal beanie with shoulder pads in sports coats and blazers can create interesting retro vibes," he says. "The added volume [of the] shoulder pads lends to an overall silhouette that can be styled with high-waisted trousers, beanies with a veil, or even a sequined beanie hat paired with loafers. Additionally, using the urban flair of a beanie and t-shirt to offset a sharply tailored suit will easily do the trick."
3. With a punk-style look
Beanies became super popular when punk-style clothing had a surge in the early 2000s. Now, Freeman says this type of look still really works. "A dark, edgy beanie is perfect with an oversized novelty tee, skinny jeans and combat boots," he shares. "And don't forget your chain belt!"
4. With a '90s hip-hop revival look
According to Freeman, the right beanie can evoke the vibrant, euphoric vibe of mid-to-late '90s hip-hop. Think bright reds, yellows and blues for a look like this and plenty of denim. Cargo pants, baggy jeans, sneakers and a heavier jacket also complete the look here."Artists like B2K, Xscape, TLC and Aaliyah, known for their tastefully oversized silhouettes, brought the beanie trend into focus during that era," he adds.Related: 12 Ways to Make an Outfit Look More Expensive, According to a Celebrity Stylist
5. With an everyday casual look
You can dress up a casual everyday outfit by adding a beanie that's more than your average black or grey style. Freeman says to experiment with beanies that have a bold texture or pattern, or ones that are made from a unique fabric. "They can add visual interest to even the simplest outfits! Pairing them with a vintage t-shirt, distressed flannel or denim pants can create an instant hit for both men and women," he says.
6. With a monochrome look
Freeman loves a monochrome look with a beanie—his particular favorite being denim-on-denim. He loves putting together a denim-on-denim outfit with a beanie for cooler nights, but this look can also be styled with more unique-textured denim and a funkier-style beanie for added flair. "Try pairing a denim long-sleeve button-up shirt or denim jacket with denim shorts, and complete the look with a chic boot and beanie for that perfect monochromatic magic," he adds. "Don't forget to top it off with a stylish beanie!"
7. With a trench coat and trousers
You can't go wrong by wearing your beanie with a simple, classic style like a trench coat and trousers. While this look might be simple, Freeman says it's still fashion-forward. If you want to take it up a notch, he also has a few other styling suggestions if you're pairing your beanie with a trench coat. "Wear it pulled down low with a well-fitted spring trench, a t-shirt, wide leg trousers, and low top trainers," he shares. "This look is a unisex template you can't go wrong with."Up Next:
