Joe Flacco Update, NFL Playoff Odds, Trade Deadline Rumors, Players to Watch in Week 9, World Series and Super Bowl Comp, and Other Bears Bullets

I was up late last night (a.k.a. early this morning) looking for a World Series comp that my football-loving audience here at BN Bears would understand. Before nodding off to dreamland, I landed on the idea of the Blue Jays losing Games 6 and 7 (and, ultimately, the World Series) was the baseball version of the 49ers last two Super Bowl losses. Both teams had leads and command of the game against juggernaut favorites, only to not cash in on opportunities before the big baddies came through with a come-from-behind win. Tremendous and thrilling games across the board, but it just wasn’t meant to be for the underdogs.

Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, let’s direct our attention to NFL Week 9. The Bears are on the road again facing an AFC North foe. This time it is a Cincinnati Bengals team that isn’t playing any games regarding the status of the starting quarterback. Joe Flacco is set to start for the Bengals:

#Bengals QB Joe Flacco is planning to start on Sunday, sources say, barring something unforeseen with his AC joint sprain in his right shoulder. There was optimism after Thursday’s practice and that continued this weekend. No one knows how it’ll react. But he’s giving it a shot. pic.twitter.com/IQBsOpjh6i

    — Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) November 1, 2025 To be clear: I don’t think that the Ravens’ whoopsiedoodle with the injury report was the difference in Chicago’s Week 8 defeat. I’d just like some consistency in injury reporting and punishments from the league offices. That is all. Colston Loveland is getting consideration from ESPN as a Week 9 fantasy sleeper (bold emphasis mine): “Loveland could be leaned on more this week with Cole Kmet still limited in practice and multiple Bears receivers dealing with injuries. The rookie tight end played over 80% of the offensive snaps and saw five targets against the Ravens. What makes Loveland even more appealing is the matchup, as no defense allows more fantasy points per game to tight ends than Cincinnati.” It’s all hands on deck for the Bears defense as they go about slowing down Cincy’s star receiver, Ja’Marr Chase. Jason Lieser (Sun-Times) points out that Chase has more targets in his last two games (42) than any Bears receiver other than Rome Odunze (56) this season. Suddenly, I’m regretting trading Chase from my fantasy team a few weeks ago — even if I did get a haul that includes Saquon Barkley and three other pieces. Cornerback Nahshon Wright tops this list of Bears players to watch in Week 9. I would feel better going into this game if “all hands on deck” meant all hands were healthy in Chicago’s secondary. The Bears will be without Jaylon Johnson and Kyler Gordon, but they do get Tyrique Stevenson back in the lineup after he sat out last week because of a shoulder injury. Joining the group in Week 9 is Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, a multi-positional defender who is a known agitator. Yours truly is holding out hope that he can coax some opponents into committing dumb penalties. Mandatory Credit: David Banks-Imagn Images Two quotes (via 670 The Score) that stand out to me from Bears Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen on CJGJ, who he coached wihile with the New Orleans Saints from 2019-21:

“He’s a highly competitive player, and I think he goes out there and competes on every single play. And that’s fully what I would expect for him to do with us. So, I think he brings a little attitude to the football team, which I think is good.”

“We all mature with age. Like, I think all of us, we make some mistakes as we’re younger and we kind of learn from them and we kind of move on. I’ve seen a player that’s matured a little bit, and yet he still has that fiery attitude, which I think that’s what makes him who he is.”

Someone dropped an A.J. Pierzynski comp on me when discussing what Chauncey Gardner-Johnson brings to the table, and it has stuck with me for the last few days. This image lives in my mind rent free…

Had to freshen up the BN Bears photo library this morning because this was the only other CJ Gardner-Johnson image we had at our disposal:[image or embed]

    — Bleacher Nation Bears (@bn-bears.bsky.social) October 29, 2025 at 8:02 AM … and after today, we’ll have a new image of CJGJ because we’ll have pics of him in a Bears uniform. Good luck explaining that to the 2020 version of yourself. Last week’s loss to the Ravens put a huge dent in the odds of Chicago’s football team making the postseason for the first time since 2020. A win would have put the Bears at a 41 percent chance of making the playoffs. But losing dropped them all the way down to 25 percent. To say it was a big swing would be quite the understatement. You might not be looking at playoff probabilities after that one, but I still will. The Athletic allows you to explore postseason outcomes for teams. And when it comes to the Bears, it’s not great. A win would get them back on the right track and put their odds of making it at 32 percent. But if they suffer a second consecutive defeat, it would drop their odds to 16 percent. Again, it’s a big swing game. Brad Biggs (Tribune) on potential Bears movement at the Nov. 4 NFL Trade Deadline: If there’s a move, it will probably would not be one that has your cellphone buzzing with alerts. It might look more like the one Poles made at the deadline a year ago when he sent running back Khalil Herbert to the Bengals for a seventh-round pick that turned into running back Kyle Monangai. There is a non-zero chance that the Chauncey Gardner-Johnson signing was the move for the Bears ahead of the deadline. Over at The Athletic, Dianna Russini’s rumor roundup has a bunch of nuggets and tidbits. And yet, my favorite has nothing to do with trade rumors and everything to do with former Bears coach Thomas Brown. The former interim head coach seems to have made a strong impression with the New England Patriots, and it makes me feel like now is a good time to point out that some of Caleb Williams’ best work as the Bears’ rookie QB was with Brown calling plays as the interim offensive coordinator from the booth. Now he is working with Drake Maye, who will drum up MVP consideration if he keeps up his current pace. I like to see ex-Bears do well, especially ones whose lone win as a head coach was against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. © Jeff Hanisch-Imagn Images Reading through Albert Breer’s rumor-mill piece at The MMQB, it sounds like everyone is looking for help at cornerback and edge rusher — just like the Bears. The Green Bay Packers will be wearing their Fighting Illini-themed fauxback uniforms today:

    — Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) November 2, 2025 I don’t like saying nice things about the Packers, but I saw a pic featuring receiver Romeo Doubs wearing a leather fauxback Guardian cap helmet and I thought it was a sharp look. Leaning into it is always better than the alternative.
