‘What are they going to do?’: Rochester residents turn to food pantries as SNAP funding runs dry amid shutdown

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The federal government shutdown has now lasted one month, and SNAP funding has officially run dry. A federal judge ruled that the government must use at least contingency funds to support the program.

People who rely on food stamps are turning to food pantries like the one at Emmanuel Baptist Church. We observed at least five people visiting the pantry, with three taking food and two donating. Those who depended on food stamps say these resources are crucial for their survival.

Those in need of food were able to take canned goods, packaged foods, and paper bags filled with snacks and food.

“A cookie and a thing of water,” said one man, who took one of the bags.

When asked how much pantries like Emmanuel Baptist Church’s help him, he added, “Soon as you open the church right here, I’ll eat this right here. And then I’ll take the macaroni & cheese home with me and cook it later. There’s five boxes here I think. Five boxes here, so I’ll cook two of them and that’s a meal,” he said.

The anonymous man shared that he used to rely on SNAP but now turns to pantries for food.

“This is nice that people do this all. People come and drop food off here because every day I come here. I haven’t seen it that packed. I’ve never seen it that packed…Kids, senior citizens. What are they going to do? They can’t really work because they’re senior citizens, you know, what I mean?” he said.

Across the county, other food pantries are opening their doors to donations and those in need. Debby Evans, executive director of the Irondequoit Community Cupboard, called on the community for support.

“Today is our normal distribution day. I have all my volunteers ready for the large volume, hopefully, that we’re getting. The incoming donations based on everything that’s happening in the country right now,” Evans said.

“You know, this is affecting all the food pantries, not just ours. And anybody who can make donations to all of the area food pantries, I think everybody would be grateful. We don’t know when this is going to end. And, I can tell you based on the calls that I’ve had, everybody is scared. A mom or a senior citizen, they just don’t know where their next meal is coming from,” said Evans.

For those needing food assistance, resources are available here.

As of now, it is unclear when SNAP benefits will be reinstated. The process to load money on EBT cards typically takes up to two weeks.
