The Best Start in Nearly Three Decades (and Other Bulls Bullets)

The last time the Chicago Bulls were 5-0, Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen were headed full steam ahead toward their fifth NBA championship. Ridiculous.

On the one hand, I have no clue what is going on. The Chicago Bulls were viewed by almost everyone as one of the NBA’s retooling bottom feeders. They were projected to finish with a win total in the low 30s and possibly miss the Play-In Tournament altogether. In that sense, a 5-0 start is absolutely mind-boggling, especially when we consider the more experienced and superstar-led teams they beat. On the other hand, I know exactly what is going on. The Chicago Bulls have come out looking like one of the most motivated and connected young groups in the league. They have an incredibly well-rounded roster with multiple ball-handlers and versatile athletes. Even more importantly, they are all completely and utterly bought into the brand of basketball Billy Donovan has sold them. So … as bizarre as this hot start looks on paper, it doesn’t actually feel that bizarre when you watch this group play. Mandatory Credit: Patrick Gorski-Imagn Images Last night was a step up. The Bulls were facing off against a New York Knicks team that many have viewed as the Eastern Conference favorites. Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns are two of the best scorers at their respective positions. Meanwhile, Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby are two of the best defenders in the league. If the Bulls were going to lose their first game of the season, fans could have lived with this one. Nevertheless, what Chicago showed is that their style of play can work against almost anyone. They aren’t a team that relies too heavily on isolation scoring. They aren’t a team that needs to feast behind the three-point line. They aren’t a team that must beat you down physically. Instead, they are a team that is capable of doing nearly all those things and can lean on countless contributors. It’s a hard squad to prepare for. This nine-pass sequence shared by Steph Noh speaks to what I’m talking about …

This is a great example of what I talked about in my column today. Bulls don't have great individual advantage creation, so they screen and pass like hell. Nine pass possession here. pic.twitter.com/BStIWgBa1Z

    — Steph Noh (@StephNoh) November 1, 2025 One of the most encouraging things about last night’s win is that the Bulls pulled it off DESPITE losing the possession battle, the second-chance points battle, and allowing 18 made threes. That says A LOT about how difficult their offense is to stop and how efficient they have become. I was really wondering what might happen when an opponent finally found their rhythm behind the arc, particularly with this defense already allowing the most points in the paint per game over their first four games. But it didn’t matter a lick! The Bulls countered by creating tons of open looks and draining 17 of their own triples. They also used their quick decision-making and slashing ability to put real pressure on the Knicks’ interior defense. They shot a season-high 35 free throw attempts and leaned heavily on getting to the charity stripe in the fourth quarter to keep the Knicks from making it a game. It was smart and aggressive basketball. Speaking of which, Josh Giddey was the catalyst for that. He played one of the single-best games of his career, finishing the night with 32 points, 10 rebounds, and 9 assists. He came out as assertive as we’ve ever seen him, going right at the Knicks off the bounce and showing no hesitation to let it fly from long range (7-10 for 21 points at half!). Obviously, seeing him remain efficient from distance this season is huge, but I continue to be most impressed with his physicality and driving ability. While he may not be the most explosive athlete, his size advantage and ball-handling ability can be a massive problem for opposing backcourts. When he is determined to get downhill, it’s really hard for smaller defenders to guard him without fouling or contest his shots properly. I also think it’s fair to say the Josh Giddey All-Star campaign starts now. He is averaging 22.0 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 8.0 assists on 48.1 percent shooting from the field and 45.5 percent from downtown. No, I don’t expect the three-point shooting to remain anywhere near that high, but the 37.0 percent we saw last season sure seems doable! He does a great job picking and choosing his spots. He is truly playing tremendous basketball and putting a lot of those questions about being a winning player to bed. The Bulls are playing this way largely because it’s a reflection of what Giddey does best. That’s the kind of impact an All-Star has on his team! Did you see this move from Patrick Williams? You really know things have changed when the forward is pulling out stuff like this …

Idk what’s more shocking … the Bulls being 5-0 or Patrick Williams doing stuff like this now (? @CHSN_Bulls) pic.twitter.com/6yav17j8jI

    — Bleacher Nation Bulls (@BN_Bulls) November 1, 2025 I also absolutely love the mentality we saw in the locker room video shared after the game. Yes, they look hyped … but they also look hungry. Five games ain’t nothing in the NBA, and they got another one on Sunday.

    — Chicago Bulls (@chicagobulls) November 1, 2025 I probably should also mention that last night was the Bulls’ first NBA Cup game and win of the season. They have three more on the schedule over the next few weeks and are looking to advance past the group stage for the first time in tournament history. While a matchup with Giannis and the Bucks will be a challenge, the other two cup games will come against Miami and Charlotte. Those feel like two very winnable games for this group. Can they finally get to the knockout round? The pinstripes were absolutely beautiful btw …

    — Chicago Bulls (@chicagobulls) November 1, 2025 Is it mock draft season already!? Tab has a fresh one up for Blackhawks fans. The Bears will be without De’Andre Swift on Sunday, but their rookie has slowly but surely looked ready to take on a bigger workload.
