Elaine Hendrix wasn't sure if she'd be able to return to the ballroom floor after suffering a scary injury during Dancing with the Stars rehearsals earlier this week.
While practicing to perform her dance for the Halloween Night special on Tuesday (Oct. 28), Hendrix unexpectedly injured her rib and had to be taken to the emergency room. While she's now cleared to continue dancing in the competition, she admit she wasn't sure what was going to happen in the moments following the incident.
Looking back, Hendrix explained that rehearsals were going fine but one movement caused her to experience a pain that was "nothing like" anything she had ever felt before.
"That day literally took my breath away," Hendrix told PEOPLE in an interview published Friday (Oct. 31). "In that moment, I thought something very, very serious had happened, and I could barely breathe. I almost passed out."

She continued, "I couldn't move without just a searing pain going through me. It was so sweet because everyone — apparently, I was really out of it — really rallied around me."
Despite the extreme pain she was experiencing, Hendrix admits she tried to convince DWTS production that she didn't need to be taken to the hospital as she needed to complete her dance that evening.
"All I could think of was like, ‘Okay, what do we do to get me up and going? I got to dance tonight," Hendrix recalled. ""And they're like, ‘Oh no, honey, you got to go to the hospital.’ And I'm like, ‘No, no, no, no, no, no,’ and I'm begging them not to take me to the hospital."
Hendrix says in the end it was a good thing that they took her to the hospital to get fully checked out. While there, both her pro partner Alan Bersten and BFF Lisa Ann Walter were by her side.
She was later been cleared by a team of doctors, who believe she may have a strain or a muscle tear. Thankfully she knows "nothing is fractured, nothing's broken, nothing is punctured."
And after two days of rest, Hendrix is back to rehearsals with Bersten. She says she's added physical therapy to her routine — and is now more determined than ever.
"I'm just hoping again to go all the way, because I want to keep showing what I can do," Hendrix concluded.
