CBS Mornings anchor Tony Dokoupil has issued an apology after his misspoke during a live television broadcast. Dokoupil was chatting with Nate Burleson and Gayle King about Kim Kardashian's recent comments about the moon landing when the slip-up occurred.
"We’re talking five or so decades we haven’t been back," said Burleson. "Now, I get it. NASA has said in the past it's too expensive or the hype has died down or priorities have shifted for the U.S. in our plans to go to the moon. But yet and still, we haven't been back. Now, I'm not saying she's right. I'm just saying, her curiosities are fair."
"We did it with less technology than a flip phone, with computers the size of refrigerators and no GPS," Burleson continued. "You're telling me that we've lost the WiFi password to the moon? We can't get there?" he questioned.
Then, Dokoupil jumped in.
"Nate, it is Halloween. Buzz Aldrin's skeletal bones are going to come out of the ground and punch you in the face," he said. Shortly after, Dokoupil asked producers for clarification. "“I want to make sure Buzz Aldrin is actually dead. I kind of lost track of it. Please tell me right now if it’s not, because I want to clear this up," he said.
After a bit more back-and-forth about the moon landing, Burleson let Dokoupil know that Aldrin is indeed alive.
“Is he?” Dokoupil replied before speaking in the camera to Aldrin. "Buzz, come on the show. We love you. Punch me in the face, actually. Punch both of us. Buzz Aldrin, my apologies," he continued. "I think Kim Kardashian owes you an apology as well."
Aldrin will be 96 in January. He lost his wife Anca Faur earlier this month.
"I am so fortunate to have found and married the love of my life. She brought joy to everything we did together. I will miss her dearly," Aldrin said in a statement posted on Facebook on October 29.
