Tom Golisano talks about his philanthropy, business success and legacy

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Entrepreneur, billionaire, politician, civic leader and sports team owner Tom Golisano has surpassed $1 billion in philanthropic giving with his latest round going toward creating an alliance of children’s hospitals across the country bearing his name.

“I’m proud to announce that I am committing $253 million…” Golisano said while speaking to an audience this week.

It’s a staggering sum but just the latest effort by Golisano to create better health outcomes for children and he says there will be more announcements to follow.

“This is pretty much just the beginning. We plan to work our way across the country, adding children’s hospitals as much as possible,” Golisano told News10NBC’s Brett Davidsen during a one on one interview.

At age 83, he likes to joke about his time left here on Earth.

“As you’ve heard me say before, I’ve applied for immortality and I’ve been denied…” Golisano said.

While he recently had a pacemaker put in, he told Davidsen the timing of his giving has nothing to do with any health related issues. He says he’s just being practical.

“The idea of giving these financial grants to these organizations while I’m alive and they get it sooner, I get to enjoy it more and they get to enjoy it more,” said Golisano.

Golisano amassed his fortune by building the payroll company Paychex, starting out in 1971 with $3,000 and a credit card. It now serves 800,000 customers and employs close to 20,000 people.

“The financial position that Paychex has achieved has made all of this possible. They should get all the credit,” Golisano said.

Brett Davidsen, News10NBC: “What advice would you give to people about how to live a successful life?”

Tom Golisano: “That’s an interesting question.”

“I would say the thing that’s made my life most interesting is, thinking outside the box. Particularly as it applies to business,” said Golisano. “To me that’s the most rewarding part, is to create something that made peoples’ lives better.”

Golisano is now making lives better by creating a legacy of giving. He’s donated more than a billion dollars of his fortune, leading some to call him Rochester’s modern day George Eastman.

Brett Davidsen: “How do you feel when you hear that?”

Tom Golisano: “Well, I’m flattered. I’m not sure I believe it.”

“He did a lot of great things. I’m happy to be in the same grade with him,” Golisano said.

Golisano says he hopes to add another 40 children’s hospitals to the 10 that are now part of the alliance.
