If you think this is a punchline, the joke is on you: underestimate the Kardashians at your peril.
The power of America’s first family has never been clearer after Nasa publicly responded to comments Kim Kardashian made on her reality show.
Kim suggested that a conspiracy theory about the 1969 moon landing may be correct, and rather than being unaware of what she’s said, or laughing it off, the US-based National Aeronautics and Space Administration quickly intervened. As well they should.
To recap, for those who accidentally missed The Kardashians this week, the cameras were filming her filming – keep up – All’s Fair, the legal drama she is starring in, and caught her chatting with co-star Sarah Paulson between takes.
“I’m sending you a million articles with both Buzz Aldrin and the other one,” Kim says, simultaneously causing controversy and dissing Neil Armstrong in one sentence.
She continues: “This girl says, ‘What was the scariest moment?’ And [Aldrin] goes: ‘There was no scary moment ’cause it didn’t happen. It could’ve been scary, but it wasn’t ’cause it didn’t happen.’” Kim then opines that because Aldrin has “gotten old,” he’s now “saying everything”.
“So I think it didn’t happen,” she adds.
A producer asks her to clarify during a confessional to camera, and Kim doubles down. “I think it was fake. I’ve seen a few videos [of] Buzz Aldrin talking about how it didn’t happen. He says it all the time now, in interviews. Why does Buzz Aldrin say it didn’t happen? There’s no gravity on the moon — why is the flag blowing? The shoes that they have in the museum that they wore on the moon have a different print than the photos. Why are there no stars?”
When asked how she would respond to those who doubted her, she suggested they do their own research on the subject.
“They’re going to say I’m crazy no matter what. But like, go to TikTok. See for yourself,” she insists (because, like, of course that’s the trusted source one should head straight for.)
Nasa acting head, and transportation secretary, Sean Duffy went immediately to social media, posting a statement along with the offending clip of The Kardashians.
“Yes, Kim, we’ve been to the Moon before… 6 times!” he wrote, adding that the Nasa Artemis mission plans to return to the moon under Donald Trump’s leadership as he vowed: “We won the last space race and we will win this one too!”
The hypothesis that the Apollo 11 astronauts blasted into orbit and hung around there while scenes filmed in a studio were broadcast instead has been repeatedly disproven. But Sean Duffy is obviously all too aware that Kim Kardashian is so influential there’s a very real danger people would be utterly convinced by what she says. She’s also the only conspiracy theorist who could make a tin foil hat look good, and her reach is such that she could probably market and then sell them for hundreds of dollars apiece too. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist – although they actually are, at Nasa – to know you don’t mess about when it comes to Kim.
This is, after all, the person who completely transformed the way women feel about their own bodies. She dragged us from a time when, “Does my bum look big in this?” was such a common concern it became a comedy catchphrase, and turned it into an aspiration. Just this month she launched a furry thong that gives the wearer the appearance of a full bush, and made a generation wonder if that laser removal might have been a mistake. People genuinely care about this stranger’s opinion of their pubic hair, and everything else under the sun (and now, moon, too).
Of course snobs roll their eyes and say Kim and her family don’t matter, and it makes zero difference.
The Kardashians know every word they say will be leapt on, dissected, disparaged, and still somehow manage to speak freely. It’s their version of dancing like no-one’s watching – talking like no-one’s listening. Even though the whole world always is.
However, there is a chance Nasa’s rebuttal could backfire – that it could lead people to wonder if they’re protesting too much, and only make them more certain that Kim was on to something. If so, bad luck, Buzz Aldrin and, you know, The Other One.
