Madison Central Girls Continue Dynasty, Tupelo Boys win at Mississippi Class III Championships

It was the continuation of one dynasty while also the end of another at the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class III state championships on Oct. 17.

    The Madison Central girls’ team won its 12th straight championship, while the Tupelo boys team captured its first state title since 2019, in the process ending the five-year run of titles by Madison Central.

    Girls’ Recap

    Madison Central won on the strength of its relays, sweeping all three. Central’s team of Carly Long, Gigi Nguyen, Kylie Young and Elizabeth Crawford won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:53.62.

    Madison Central’s team of Young, Jenn Moulder, Ruth Largen and Mollie Messer won the 200 free relay in a time of 1:41.67, while the quartet of Messer, Long, Moulder and Nguyen won the 400 free relay in a time of 3:41.96.

    Messer, a junior, was the only individual champion for Madison Central, taking the 100 back in a time of 57.24.

    The individual standouts were Desoto Central junior Kaia Robinson and KK Ramirez of Northwest Rankin.

    Robinson won the 50 free (23.76) and the 100 fly (56.97), while Ramirez won the 200 IM (2:13.25) and 100 free (54.11), both of which were best times.

    Other individual winners were:

    Tupelo freshman Willa Martin won the 200 free in a time of 1:56.47. Caroline Reis of Tupelo won the 500 free, clocking a time of 5:23.87. Brielle Goza of Brandon took the 100 breast in a personal best time of 1:09.10.

    Boys’ Recap

    Tupelo won its 15th championship in school history, with Lewisburg earning runner-up honors by one point over five-time defending champion Madison Central.

    The biggest reason Tupelo got it done was the performance of sophomore Colin Wright, who swam personal best times to win the 100 free (45.09) and 100 back (48.97) and was also part of two winning relay teams.

    Wright teamed with Isaiah Barbour, Mason Cordell and HB Pannell to win the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:35.96, and then swam anchor for the 400 free relay team, which won in 3:15.63. Pannell, Sohum Patel and Cordell were the other team members.

    The 200 free relay was won by Lewisburg’s team of Yelson Puozaa, Jake Stock, Logan Clay, and Anderson Smith in a time of 1:30.89.

    Smith, a sophomore, was the other individual standout besides Wright, winning the 200 IM (1:55.01) and the 500 free (4:44.05) in personal best times.

    Other individual winners were:

    Starkville’s Teddy Brain in the 200 free with a time of 1:43.63. Pannell in the 50 free in a time of 21.44. MJ Covington of Madison Central in the 100 fly in a time of 50.61. Omar Abdo of Madison Central in the 100 breast with a personal best time of 56.89.
