FORT BRAGG, CA — When Chief Cervenka announced his retirement, the city hired Eric Swift to act as interim police chief. Swift is expected to serve until the recruitment process for the new chief is complete. The city has hired Bob Hall and Associates to manage the recruitment. Hall indicated at the September 22nd city council meeting that the recruitment process will run at least until the end of 2025. Even when a new chief is selected, it could be several months before they can leave their current position and relocate to Fort Bragg.
Swift left his position with the Napa County Sheriff’s office in 2022, after eight years, and relocated to Georgia, where he served as a Major in the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office until he left to accept the position in Fort Bragg. During his time in Napa, he also served in Calistoga under an agreement with the Sheriff’s office to assist with a staffing shortage. He spent the bulk of his career with the Santa Rosa Police Department. He also worked for the FBI and is a former United States Marine.
His experience in Calistoga, a small community with a large tourist industry, should be of service to him in Fort Bragg. The Fort Bragg Police Department has twenty-four employees, of which sixteen are sworn officers. They are currently recruiting for a sworn officer and a part-time transportation officer.
Swift is considering applying for the chief’s position, but has not made up his mind. He was fortunate to find housing in Fort Bragg before leaving Georgia and has had a positive experience at several of our local restaurants. Swift is not involved with the recruiting process.
During his time here, Swift plans to focus on the stability of the department and continue to support his officers and staff. He also wants to continue to build trust and transparency with the community and to continue an open dialogue. He intends to carry on the popular CARE program that Cervenka put in place. The CARE program has helped numerous homeless individuals get off the streets into permanent housing and, in some cases, to reunite with family.
In response to recent criticism from some members of the public of Cervenka’s handling of personnel cases, Swift said that Cervenka advised him to review all Internal Affairs cases for the last five years. Swift has started that process, but has not yet reviewed the most recent case that was brought up during public comment at the October 14th city council meeting. He did say that Cervenka has remained in touch and has been available to Swift when he has questions. Swift is not familiar with the details of any agreement Cervenka may or may not have with the City Manager.
This is domestic violence month, and there has been a disconnect in the past between the FBPD’s reported case numbers and Project Sanctuary’s. Swift said, “Domestic Violence is very serious and it does affect our community and is detrimental to the victims, so I do want to reach out to Project Sanctuary as an agency to ensure that we’re doing everything we can to understand their reporting structure and what we need to do better and improve upon our cooperation.”
