4Reel Fishing: We got Trout plants!
Great news! The California Department of Fish and Wildlife has stocked not one, not two but, three local waterways with trout plants this week. Yes, Lake Emily in Willits ( Brooktrails ), the Mill Creek Pond and the East Fork of the Russian River all received an overdue stock of Rainbow Trout. Hip - hip hurray!(Contributed)

The clock is ticking. Good Thursday my fellow anglers. We have maybe three weeks left of good fishin’.  Don’t let them slip away, go get on the water.  When the rain comes, the fishin’ is much tougher.

Blue Lakes – Well, have you heard?  The Upper Blue Lake has received a trout plant next week!  Hip hip hooray!  Thank you Fish and Wildlife!   There are a lot of trout to be hooked.

Successful trout anglers have been doing well fishin’ along Hwy. 20 and off the docks at Blue Lake Lodge and Pine Acres.  Here’s a tip: If the water surface is like glass, fish closer to the top.  You could cast a Roostertail, Super Duper, or Castmaster.  Or, use a sliding bobber with salmon eggs and a small piece of Powerbait.  Cast it out and watch for a bite.  If a breeze comes up, common on Blue Lakes, fill the sliding bobber about 3/4 full of water so that it will sink. Rig it with Powerbait only. This will float, keeping it off the bottom.   Slowly reel in your slack and watch your line for a small twitch or yank.  Set the hook – FISH ON!

Clear Lake- Did you hear that?  The exhale. ( Aaaahhhhhhh – sigh )!  That was Clear Lake.  It is happy that the last of the major bass fishing tournaments are over until early spring.  The last six or seven weeks has been a bit much.  I love fishin’ Clear Lake too, but sometimes I think there are too many tournaments. The thing about Clear Lake is that every time you fish it, you could hook into a bass of a life time.  There are many folks that believe that a California state record is swimming in Clear Lake.  Our top rated bass fishing lake is a treasure.  Always practice catch and release so that our grandkid’s will have the opportunity to catch their bass of their life time.

Lake Mendocino- Teresa and I haven’t fished our backyard lake for several weeks. But, I hope we can get a chance to get out on it’s water before the rains are here.  I have fished Lake Mendocino all of my life and I believe that the fall fishin’ is the best.  It is a fast paced, aggressive style that works well right now.  Keep the boat moving, covering a lot of water and throw Crankbaits and Rattle Traps.  Chrome and blue/white and orange colors will get you hooked up.  Concentrate on the deep water, pretty much only small fish are in the shallow flats.  I have heard a couple reports that some of the folks fishin’ from kayaks have been hooking into stripers here and there. They have been trolling a small Castmaster.

Also, Catfish are being caught in North finger of Crappie Cove and in the river channel.  Good Luck!

Lake Sonoma – The bass fishin’ has been okay.  Not a boatload of anglers catching limits of bass.  But most are getting to land a few.  Try slow dragin’ a senko under the bridge and around the marina docks.  Plus some small mouth bass have been caught along the dam.

Folks, the good fishin’ days are flying by, before you know it we will have cabin fever.  I’ll be putting on Frogg Toggs and fishin’ in the rain.  So, Go –  What are you waiting for? –  Go get ‘em…TIck, tick, tick.

Thanks again and, remember to keep it reel.

     Blessings,  Don   –  4REEL Fishin’
