A suburban man is facing multiple charges after he fell asleep behind the wheel of a self-driving Tesla before it hit a South Barrington police car earlier this month.
According to South Barrington officials, the incident occurred on October 15.
The driver was in the front seat of the Tesla, which was in self-driving mode at the time of the crash, officials said. It is believed the driver fell asleep while the vehicle was making its way down a road when the crash occurred.
The vehicle slammed into the back of a South Barrington police squad car, leaving both officers with minor injuries, according to a press release.
The driver of the vehicle was arrested and charged with multiple traffic violations in connection to the crash.
“Technology continues to evolve and can enhance safety when used properly,” said Deputy Chief Adam Puralewski said in a statement. “However, it’s important to remember that drivers are still responsible for the safe operation of their vehicles at all times.”
