The King has initiated a “formal process to remove the Style, Titles andHonours of Prince Andrew”, and is to leave his home at the Royal Lodge in Windsor, Buckingham Palace has announced.
Andrew was served with a formal notice to surrender the lease and will now be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, the Palace said.
The statement said: “His Majesty has today initiated a formal process to remove the Style, Titles and Honours of Prince Andrew.
“Prince Andrew will now be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor. His lease on Royal Lodge has, to date, provided him with legal protection to continue in residence. Formal notice has now been served to surrender the lease and he will move to alternative private accommodation. These censures are deemed necessary, notwithstanding the fact that he continues to deny the allegations against him.
“Their Majesties wish to make clear that their thoughts and utmost sympathies have been, and will remain with, the victims and survivors of any and all forms of abuse.”
Andrew took a 75-year lease on the property in 2003 and paid a large amount up front, including for renovations.
The announcement comes amid increased focus on the prince over his links with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The prince has always denied any wrongdoing.The Palace’s announcement after Parliament’s spending watchdog The Public Accounts Committee yesterday (29 0ctober) raised concerns over whether the prince’s lease arrangements are “achieving the best value for money”, amid increased scrutiny over the cost of his accommodation at the Windsor mansion.
