PITTSFORD, N.Y. — A former St. John Fisher University student accused of threatening a staff member in 2024 has been arrested after being accused of being on campus and violating an order of protection, according to deputies.
In February 2024, Monroe County sheriff deputies say Shalom Mathews, who was a freshman at St. John Fisher at the time, tried to attack a staff member with a knife.
In connection to the attempted attack, Mathews was charged with attempted kidnapping and attempted sexual abuse. Investigators say Mathews intended to tie up the victim and sexually abuse her.
Deputies say a judge issued an order of protection protecting the staff member and banned Mathews from being on campus. Mathews was also expelled from the university.
On Tuesday, deputies say university security contacted them saying they believed Mathews was on the campus.
After a joint investigation, deputies say they confirmed Mathews violated the order of protection, as he drove onto the campus on Oct. 24.
Mathews was taken into custody and charged with trespassing and criminal contempt. He was arraigned in Monroe County CAP Court and released on his own recognizance.
Deputies say Mathews is still on probation related to the knife attack at the university in 2024.
In a statement, Monroe County Sheriff Todd Baxter stated, “Mathews is a repeat offender with a history of dangerous behavior to include stalking. Having the audacity to return to the same campus he was banned from after he attacked a woman is unacceptable. With a dangerousness standard, which New York State is the only state in the country that does not have one, the previous attack could be considered at his arraignment on this new charge. A dangerousness standard could have prevented Mathews from walking free today to possibly re-offend.”
