My wife and I throw a Hocus Pocus Watch Party every October. To go along with some all-too-specific decorations, we also cook up a bunch of spooky-season-themed treats for our guests. I know what you’re thinking. Are these the two coolest people alive?
The menu this season consists of pumpkin mac & cheese, caramel apple pretzel bites, mummy meatballs, apple cider old fashioneds, and plenty more. Yet STILL, I’m always incredibly anxious about not having enough food. The only thing that would be worse than attending a party that runs out of snacks and drinks is attending a party that only has candy corn or Whoopers left to offer.
My wife continues to insist that we’ll be just fine. The good news is that she is usually right. But I swear to god, if the Chicago Bulls come knocking at the door and we’re already low on sliders, I’ll go white as a ghost.
Oh, and I’m not talking about the actual Chicago Bulls, of course. That’s just what we’re calling party crashers nowadays!
Over a week into the season, the NBA still has four unbeaten teams: The Oklahoma City Thunder, the San Antonio Spurs, the Philadelphia 76ers, and the Chicago Bulls. It’s pretty easy to explain the hot start for those first three squads. One is the defending champ. One has a Top 5 player in the NBA. One has a former MVP and a couple of stud youngsters. The Chicago Bulls, however, have been true party crashers. Not a single person expected this young and starless group to begin the year 4-0, especially against an opening schedule that featured three projected playoff teams. Nevertheless, they have shocked the league with their well-rounded play and creative offensive identity. We still may be less than 5 percent of the way into the regular season, but the Bulls are reminding everyone that basketball has always been a team game. To be sure, the Bulls looked to be on the ropes Wednesday night. While the Sacramento Kings were arguably the worst team they faced so far, the veteran group was taking full advantage of Chicago’s main weakness early on. They were abusing Chicago in the paint and even outscoring them in the fastbreak. A motivated Zach LaVine was also putting together a strong Revenge Game, ultimately finishing with 30 points on 12-19 shooting from the field. To the Bulls’ credit, however, they kept their foot on the gas. They proved to be the team with better stamina and chemistry, wearing down the Kings as the fourth quarter arrived. When they needed to create separation, Ayo Dosunmu and Josh Giddey blasted their way to the rim while Patrick Williams and Kevin Huerter splashed open triples. The Kings couldn’t keep up, which is becoming a consistent problem for Bulls opponents. My favorite sequence came at the beginning of the fourth quarter. The Bulls’ first five buckets came from five different players. Giddey splashed a three. Buzelis split two defenders, switched hands, and finished the layup. Kevin Huerter nailed another triple. Jalen Smith rocked the rim. Patrick Williams knocked down his third three of the game. The Bulls were suddenly up 114-98 and did not look back. These first two and a half minutes of the quarter perfectly demonstrate what makes this Bulls team so deadly. Everyone isn’t just eating … they’re feasting.“I thought we just kept playing the game and playing the game. Obviously, they’re coming off a back-to-back, but overall I thought were moments that were really good and moments that we probably need to improve upon,” Billy Donovan said after the game (h/t CHGO). The group is really unselfish. I think we’ve talked a lot about in the offseason that when our transition got taken away from us, we had some challenges. We didn’t get to the rim a lot. We didn’t get to the free throw line a lot. I think in the offseason it was a lot of talking about we’re going to have to have more off-ball, player movement. These guys have done a really good job.”
The Bulls’ bread and butter will always be in transition, but Billy Donovan is absolutely right. This team has done a much better job in the halfcourt this season, and you have to give a lot of credit to this group for their willingness to consistently move off the ball. As important as it is to have guys who have a good feel for cutting into open lanes, it’s just as important to have guys who can locate those cutters. I think that’s one of the more underrated aspects of this team. While we all know Josh Giddey and Tre Jones are high-end facilitators, several of the Bulls’ other role players have experience playing with the ball in their hands. Ayo Dosunmu has been a lead guard at times during his career. Nikola Vucevic has always been praised for his passing instincts. Even Kevin Huerter is someone who’s been a starter and secondary ballhandler at times in this league. The Bulls have an impressive number of guys who are capable of making quick decisions. If Zach LaVine and DeMar DeRozan were the ghosts of Chicago Bulls’ past, Matas Buzelis was the ghostbuster. The forward had one of his best offensive performances of his career, finishing with 27 points on 11-18 shooting from the field. He even splashed four triples! Proving that he can be a serviceable long-range threat remains such a pivotal part of his development. If teams have to guard him along the perimeter, he will only have that much more space to work with offensively. And we’ve already seen more of what he can do off the bounce this season. He has been awesome finishing with both hands at the rim. I had a good chuckle at Giddey making fun of Buzelis icing up after the game. — Bleacher Nation Bulls (@BN_Bulls) October 30, 2025 The Kings may have lost, but it wasn’t for a lack of effort by Zach LaVine. He finished with his fourth 30+ point game of the season and dominated the Bulls inside for the majority of the game. I’ll admit, I enjoyed seeing his explosiveness on the United Center court again. I also enjoyed the Bulls’ tribute to him in the first quarter. Nicely done. I feel like some fans questioned it at times, but you could really see how much Chicago meant to LaVine last night. In addition to looking a little emotional as the crowd cheered him on, he also looked thrilled to interact with familiar faces after the game. The franchise’s sixth leading scorer also stopped by the locker room to hang out, according to K.C. Johnson. So far this season, I’ve seen Nikola Vucevic have a successful dive cut to the rim and attack a closeout off the bounce. HURRY. TRADE HIM NOW!VOOCH OFF THE BOUNCE LOL(? @chicagobulls) pic.twitter.com/71KqP7ZuCT
