Nationals and Twins Going in Very Different Directions with Their Managerial Hires

Two managerial hires to share today, with each of the Washington Nationals and Minnesota Twins reportedly getting their new skippers.

The Twins are going a very traditional route, hiring former Pittsburgh Pirates manager Derek Shelton to take over:

Shelton was actually the bench coach for the Twins before he was hired over by the Pirates, so there’s a lot of familiarity still there, I’d imagine. And clearly the Twins don’t blame Shelton for the performance of the Pirates, overall, while he was the steward. Not exactly the most aggressive organization when it comes to building out a competitive roster.

Meanwhile, as the Twins go with a guy who has been serving in some kind of coaching capacity for the last 28 years, the Nationals are hiring a guy who has barely been alive that long:

It’s a big swing for a Nationals organization that is overhauling its front office, and trying to turn the corner on a very long post-Bryce-Harper, post-Stephen-Strasburg, post-Juan-Soto rebuilding process.

Butera, drafted in 2015(!), spent four years in the minor leagues with the Rays before becoming a minor league manager in the Rays’ and Yankees’ systems. Clearly, he was tabbed very early as an up-and-coming coach/manager, but this is obviously an extremely aggressive move by the Nationals. Maybe not QUITE as aggressive as the Giants hiring a college coach with no pro experience, but close. It’ll be fascinating to see how it plays out.
