The Carry-On Laundry Hack I Wish I Knew Sooner

More and more, it’s becoming popular for people to travel with only a carry-on. This is partly to do with the astronomical prices that airlines charge for luggage these days, and partly due to people wanting to be more minimalist in their travels. It’s no longer necessary to wow people on social media with multiple outfits to show off everyday on your vacation, and instead, people are focusing more on saving money on flights and luggage and spending it on the actual experiences.

I am constantly traveling, whether it’s for work or pleasure. I’ve traveled with a touring Broadway show across the US and Japan, I’ve worked on cruise ships as an entertainer, and I also solo travel quite often for pleasure. While I’ve finally gotten my carry-on packing skills down to a science, it definitely took a lot of trial and error to get there. One of the toughest things to figure out is laundry, because when you’re packing with just a carry-on, odds are you’re going to want to wash some of your clothes.

How to do laundry on a vacation while staying at a hotel! I call it … Sink Laundry!! It’s perfect for families traveling on an extended stay without access to a washer and dryer. 1. Order Tide Sink Detergent from Amazon. 2. Soak clothes in hot water in sink. 3. Wash clothes with cool water. 4. Wring clothes out. 5. Hang to dry. Voila! For extra cleanliness and stains, purchase the Tide Stain Remover Wipes and touch up stains on the go. I prefer these to the Tide Pen, but the Tide Pen works, as well! #travelhack #traveltip #travelingwithkids #bigfamily #familytravel #familytravelmovement #laundryhack #laundrytip #cleaningtip #momsoftiktok momsover30 #disneyworld #traveltips

In a TikTok created by Brooke Raybould, a creator who often shares hacks for parents on the go, she shows how she does laundry while traveling with her family. What she does is she always travels with small packets of sink detergent meant for clothing. These packets are incredibly small, are filled with a powder, and make washing your clothes in a small space nice and easy.

She shows that she fills the sink with hot water, pours in the detergent, and mixes in her dirty clothes. Then, while her and her family go out to dinner or explore for the evening, the clothes soak. Once they come back, all she does is wash out each item with running water, ring them dry, hang the clothing, and her laundry is finished! She doesn’t have to pay to use hotel laundry or a laundromat, and it also saves time by allowing her to do it right in her hotel room.

Another plus to using these sink detergent packets is that you can fit tons of them in your carry-on. They are thin and compact, so you can easily slide them in between packing cubes or on the sides of your luggage. Plus, washing your clothes allows you to keep all of your clothing organized in your carry-on, and you won’t have to create an extra space or packing cube for dirty clothing.

Lightweight Detergent Sheets Are Great To Use, Too

One thing that I personally swear by is lightweight detergent sheets. When I finally discovered these, it was after I had already traveled for a year on my Broadway tour. I was constantly lugging around a small container of Tide detergent–and one time, it even exploded in my suitcase! A friend finally showed me that she uses detergent sheets in the washer instead, and while I was hesitant that they weren’t going to clean my clothes as well as liquid detergent did, I gave them a try.

I’m happy to report that the detergent sheets work wonderfully for cleaning clothes. These are specifically meant to be used in an actual washer, so these are better to pack if you’re traveling for a bit longer or you know you’ll have access to a washing machine. My clothing always comes out smelling just as great as it does with liquid detergent. The sheets are incredibly lightweight, and usually come in a small box. What I do is I count how many sheets I think I’ll actually need, place them in a ziplock bag, and slide them in between packing cubes in my carry-on. They practically take up no room, and are a complete game changer for keeping clothes clean while traveling.
