ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester City School District is set to enhance student safety by adding stop arm cameras to school buses. These cameras will catch drivers who illegally pass stopped buses.
The city says over 800 cameras will be installed over the next two months on buses that bring RCSD students to and from school. They say footage will be reviewed locally before any citations are issued.
Rochester City Councilmember Bridget Monroe’s own son was hit by a car while getting off a bus in 2021.
“Luckily, he just had to have two surgeries and he was able to come away with his life and full mobility. But so many people don’t,” Monroe said.
A 60-day warning period for drivers will start on Nov. 3. Full enforcement begins on Jan. 3, when drivers caught by the cameras passing a stopped bus will be fined.
For a first offense, drivers will be fined $250. Drivers will be fined $275 for a second offense, and $300 for a third offense.
The East Irondequoit, Spencerport, Hilton, Webster, and Greece school districts already have stop-arm cameras in place. On Oct. 22, the West Irondequoit Central School District announced they will also be adding stop-arm cameras to school buses.
