For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Kyle Wilburn of Sailfish Aquatics in Concord, North Carolina, will stay in state for his collegiate career after announcing his verbal commitment to Queens University in Charlotte. The Cox Mill High School junior is set to join the Royals in fall of 2027.

I’m blessed to announce my commitment to continue my athletic and academic career at Queens University. I want to thank the lord who has guided me through this journey and want to thank my family, friends, and my coaches who supported me. I want to give a big thanks to Coach Jeff and all of the Queens staff for giving me this amazing opportunity. Go Royals!!

At the North Carolina HS 4A Western Regionals his sophomore year, Wilburn set a New Greater Metro 4A Record in the 200 free en route to a dominant 2+ second win. He swam a time of 1:39.25 to dip under both 1:41 and 1:40 for the first time. He went on to place 2nd in the 100 free with a time of 45.75, which marked another PB.

A week later, Wilburn took 3rd at the North Carolina 4A State Championships in the 200 free, lowering his PB by .07 seconds (1:39.18). He also placed top 8 in the 100 free, swimming a time of 45.81 for 5th overall. He scored all 30 of Cox Mill’s points to help them to a 20th place finish in a field of 63 teams.

Wilburn’s long course season was highlighted by 6 first place finishes at the Edwin C Cuttino Invite. He swam the 50 free (24.32), 100 free (51.90), 200 free (1:52.92), 50 back (28.17), 100 fly (58.10), and 400 IM (4:48.83), all of which were new personal bests. His 200 free marked a 3+ second drop from just 2 months prior.

Queens competes in the ASUN Conference and made history last year by capturing its first conference championship, just three years after joining. This season marks the Royals’ debut as a full-fledged Division I athletic program (meaning they can compete at the D1 Championships), following their reclassification process that began in 2022. Before the jump, they dominated at the Division II level, winning seven straight NCAA championships from 2015 to 2022.

The Royals were led by Daniel Meszaros and Matt Shanahan in the 200/500 frees last season, though both will have graduated once Wilburn arrives. Despite having another two years to develop, Wilburn could make an impact on Queens’ roster today—his 500 and 200 would have ranked him 3rd and 2nd, respectively, on Queens’ roster last season. Further, he’s already under what it took to score at ASUN’s last season; he would have qualified for the consolation final in the 200 and placed 6th in the 500 free championship final.

Wilburn is currently Queens’ only public commitment for their class of 2031.
