Prince Harry Shares How He and Meghan Markle Will Introduce Social Media and Phones to Their Kids

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are going to be mindful parents when it comes to letting their kids have access to social media and smart phones in the future.

"We talk about it a lot," he said on the latest episode of comedian Hasan Minhaj's podcast. "Because of what we know now, we will be way more cautious and hesitant of allowing our kids to have access to social media."

However, while he acknowledged that having a way to keep contact with kids via phone is "a really important thing," he noted that devices can be, "the gateway to everything else."

Parents to Archie, 6, and Lilibet, 4, the couple has taken up the cause of anti-bullying and mental health as Harry mentioned the estranged royals have "had our fair share of beatings on social media." Markle has openly discussed her mental health struggles following her marriage to the royal, which was a major contributor the the two stepping away from their royal duties and moving to California in 2020.

"From where I sit, how can we trust the people behind social media when we see the harm that it's created?" he said at one point during the podcast.

Stateside, the couple has continued to lend their voices to regulation on social media and AI, as they are founders of The Parents' Network through their Archewell Foundation, but also understand the difficulties that fellow parents face when it comes to allowing kids to have various social media apps or smartphones.

"Even if you're a parent, that says, 'You know what? I'm not going to allow you to be on Instagram, I'm not going to allow you to be on Snapchat,' [and] guess what happens, they go to school they get bullied because they didn't post on that platform."

As for when Harry thinks kids should be on social media?

"I think 21 is a sensible age," he said, however he noted that larger tech companies cater to kids, making it accessible for them to use social media at younger ages.

"It's still very easy for the companies to say, 'Well if you don't like it, don't use it,'" he said. "Well, you're the ones who made it super addictive in the first place and now you've got the kids hooked on it."

"I think it'll get to a stage where parents will not let their kids on social media at all," he added. ? SIGN UP for Parade’s Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox ?
