Stephen King Called These 80s Rockers the Best Rock and Blues Band of All Time

As most hardcore Stephen King devotees are probably aware, the iconic horror author is a major music fan. But when it comes to his favorite musicians, it seems his taste spans multiple genres. King has spoken about his affinity for an incredibly wide range of artists, from Bob Dylan to Gloria Gaynor (and he apparently played Lou Bega’s “Mambo No. 5" so many times his wife threatened to divorce him). So if you had to guess his favorite hard rock group, it might be tricky...except for one major clue.

During a 2015 appearance on the BBC’s Paperback Writers, King opened up about his love for AC/DC, calling them “the best rock and blues band of all time." Two years earlier, during a Reddit AMA, he awarded the Australian hard rock band second place (behind Creedence Clearwater Revival) on his list of favorite bands.

Of course, anyone who's ever seen King's 1986 directorial film debut, Maximum Overdrive, probably wouldn't be surprised, given that he asked the band to score the movie.

According to Louder, King (who was already a huge fan of the band) tracked AC/DC down and serenaded them with their own song, "Ain’t No Fun Waiting Round To Be A Millionaire." The band was so charmed by the performance that they agreed to write the score for Maximum Overdrive, which featured both previously-released tracks (including "You Shook Me All Night Long" and "Hells Bells") and new instrumentals "D.T." and "Chase The Ace," in addition to the movie's all-new theme song, "Who Made Who," which plays in the beginning of the movie.

While Maximum Overdrive was unfortunately a critical and commercial flop, the title single went on to become a chart-topper, giving AC/DC's career a much-needed boost (the band was in a bit of a slump at the time following the massive success of back-to-back albums Highway To Hell and Back In Black).

In a rare interview which originally aired on MTV, King asked AC/DC singer Brian Johnson, guitarist Angus Young and bassist Cliff Williams to share their feelings about working on Maximum Overdrive.

“I’ve never directed a picture before, and you’ve never done music for a picture before. What do you think about it? What kind of an experience was it and how did it all work out for you, once you got down to it?” King asked.

“It was an interesting thing," Johnson replied. "It was the first time I’ve been involved in anything like that. The lads said it was a bit like moving mirrors because they had to be watching the clips spot on."

“It certainly was different for us to work with film," Young agreed. "It was also good to make a video for ‘Who Made Who,’ because you have the chance to put your own input into it."

At least, all these years later, "Who Made Who" is still considered a hit...even if the same can't be said for the movie that inspired it.
