More than two years after making a controversial change to drive-thru lanes, Portillo’s appears to be reversing course.
The popular Chicago-area chain wrote in a recent blog post that it is now once again accepting cash, following a 2023 policy that removed the payment method as an option.
The significant change was originally made to help speed up the ordering process and make the experience safer for Portillo’s employees.
“The safety of Portillo’s team members and more efficient operations to benefit restaurant guests were the main drivers behind the change,” a Portillo’s spokesperson told NBC Chicago at the time.
But now, Portillo’s said “for added convenience,” its drive-thrus accept “all your favorite payment methods including cash, credit or debit cards, gift cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay.”
“That’s right, we take cash in the drive thru! However you like to pay, we’ll make it easy to grab your favorites on the go,” the chain wrote.
