PITTSFORD, N.Y. — Last week, some business owners in Pittsford discovered anonymous letters under their front doors. The letters advised owners to not choose to advertise one political side.
The letter reads: “As a small local business for all Pittsford residents, I would not segregate yourself and choose to advertise one political side. It will not help make all your customers feel welcome.”
“It’s threatening,” Holly Delgaudio, owner of Salon Industry said. “It’s unnecessary. We have our voices for a reason, and we should be able to put a sign up or not, and not have something like that be put under our door.”
The owner of a bookstore said he felt angry that someone’s trying to manipulate what businesses can and cannot display. Another owner said she would rather someone knock on her door and had a flyer like this to her in person.
Delgaudio said she found the letter while at her shop.
“I was actually here. I turned the lights on, and I went downstairs to start laundry, so I was here. I didn’t hear anything,” said Delgaudio.
Delgaudio said she doesn’t have any political campaign signs in her shop windows. The ones outside her shop were put there by someone else.
Chris Doeblin, owner of Book Culture, which is right next to Delgaudio, also got a letter.
“It seems mildly like a campaign of intimidation,” Doeblin said. “I think boycotting businesses because of the political party they’re affiliated with is just, it’s way too far gone. You’ve got to be able to do business with each other, talk to each other, go to school together and most importantly govern together.”
Tiffanie Tartaglia, who did not get a letter, said this is why she never puts anything political up in front of her shop.
“It’s just we feel comfortable that way,” Tartaglia said. “A lot of people have an opinion as if they’re going to come to your salon or not come to your salon if you have a political position or not. So we tend to just stay neutral.”
Both Delgaudio and Doeblin said this wouldn’t affect their business practices going forward. They say if they felt compelled to put up campaign posters in the future, they still would.
