During her Monday, October 27 appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the Oscar-winning actress and screenwriter didn’t hold back when asked about her feelings on AI’s growing role in Hollywood. As someone who won both an Academy Award and a BAFTA for her Sense & Sensibility screenplay, Thompson said the technology makes her “intensely irritated,” especially when AI tools attempt to edit her own writing.
“I write long hand on a pad, old script actually, because I believe that there is a connection between the brain and the hand,” the Love Actually star explained. “And then when I’ve written something, I will put it into a Word document. And recently, the Word document is constantly saying, ‘Would you like me to rewrite that for you?’ And so I end up just saying, ‘I don’t need you to rewrite what I’ve just written, will you f**k off?! Just f**k off!’ I’m so annoyed.”
When Colbert joked that she should show her Oscar to her computer, Thompson replied, “I don’t think it would care.” She went on to recall another disastrous tech moment while finishing Sense & Sensibility: “I came back from the bathroom to find that it had changed the entire script into hieroglyphs. The script, completely gone… like it had done it on purpose.”
