The Chicago Bears Host 7 Players For Tryouts on Tuesday

A banged up Chicago Bears team enters Week 9 with a 4-3 record and a cartoonishly long list of players dealing with injuries.

Hence, it makes sense that the team had more-than-a-handful of players in for tryouts on Tuesday at Halas Hall. Here is the group via the Tribune’s Brad Biggs:

Seven Players Visited Halas Hall For Tryouts With the Chicago Bears

The Bears received visits from seven players on Tuesday. Among them were two offensive tackles, a pair of interior offensive linemen, two linebackers, and a defensive end. Let’s get to know some of the recent visitors to Halas Hall:

Offensive tackle Jackson Barton, Utah — A seventh-round pick (240th overall) by the Indianapolis Colts in 2019, Barton has 13 games of playing experience under his belt with the Las Vegas Raiders (8 games from 2021-22) and Arizona Cardinals (2023-24). He started two games for the Cards in 2024 and was in the Kansas City Chiefs’ organization in 2019 when the team won Super Bowl LIV. The 6-foot-7-inch Barton was a first-team All-Pac-12 performer for the Utes in 2018. And because I like playing the connection game, it feels worth pointing out that Barton and Jaylon Johnson were teammates at Utah and that he was with K.C. when Bears GM Ryan Poles was the team’s Assistant Director of Player Personnel. Center Jake Hanson, Oregon — The Green Bay Packers used a sixth-round pick (208th overall) in the 2020 NFL Draft to take Hanson, who played collegiately at Oregon. While playing for the Ducks, Hanson was a two-time second-team All-Pac-12 performer (2018, 2019). Since joining the NFL, Hanson has 30 games (7 starts) of playing experience with the Packers (11 games from 2021-22) and New York Jets (19 games from 2023-24). Guard Royce Newman, Ole Miss — Yet another former Cheesehead was in for a tryout on Tuesday. Newman, a Packers fourth-round pick in 2021, has 52 games of experience and 24 starts under his belt with the Packers (2021-23) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2024). Steuber checks in at 6-7 and 318 pounds. If anything, something to take away from this batch of tryouts is this front office’s connection to big, lengthy offensive tackles. Store that away for the future when this team starts getting connected to NFL Draft prospects in the future. Linebacker D.J. Johnson, Oregon — A third-round pick (80th overall) by the Carolina Panthers in 2023, Johnson has collected 62 total tackles in 31 games from 2023-25. The Panthers waived Johnson on Sept. 30 after playing four games with the team.

Linebacker Rashad Weaver, Pittsburgh — Another tryout who has a unique prospect pedigree. Weaver was a Consensus All-American and first-team All-ACC player for Pitt in 2020. The Tennessee Titans used a fourth-round pick (135th overall) to snag Weaver, who has played 36 games (4 starts) of NFL ball. After spending his first three years with the Titans, Weaver played three games with the Houston Texans in 2024. Defensive end Jeremiah Martin, Washington — Martin went undrafted in 2023 and has bounced around the league since leaving college. The University of Washington product has had two stints with the Cleveland Browns (2023, 2024), spent some time with the New York Giants (2023-24), dabbled with the Green Bay Packers (2024), and made a stop with the New Orleans Saints (2025). In his final year in college, Martin was a first-team All-Pac-12 player for the Huskies playing on the same defense as Bears cornerback Kyler Gordon.

I won’t make too much out of these visits, but it is interesting to see how many of them were high-caliber players in college. Obviously, that doesn’t always translate to the big leagues. But it never hurts to freshen up the contacts list. And given how the injury bug has been gnawing at the Bears lately, it wouldn’t surprise me to see these names (and others) down the line.
