ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Jamaican community in Rochester is on edge as they track the impact of Hurricane Melissa on their loved ones back home.

Workers at Jamaican Spice, a restaurant on Monroe Avenue, shared their concerns and how their families are preparing for the storm.

The owner of Jamaican Spice has aunts, uncles, friends and other family in Jamaica. A supervisor at the restaurant also has family in the country. All the workers have discussed the storm with each other, particularly their concerns about the wind speed.

“You know, they’re boarding up, they’re doing a lot of shopping, you know, so they’re like, keeping inside. Try to keep safe, try to keep warm,” said one worker Polando Francis.

Orville Ramsey, another employee, told News10NBC his aunt in Jamaica took care of the logistics for his family before the storm made landfall and made sure they had food.

“The whole family here, we constantly watch the trajectory of the storm,” Ramsey said. “So we have definitely kept up to date with what’s happening. And, you know, I mean, we’re just on edge, hoping that everybody stays safe and batten down, as we say.”

Ramsey feels confident his family will be okay because they are not in a flood prone area.

Paul Choice, who works for Jamaican restaurant Everything Iz Good, says he hopes everything works out and his family stays safe.

“I got a lot of family — brothers and sisters and father and a lot of relatives but everybody’s boarding up and battening down their house the best they can. board up the doors, the roof, whatever they can to secure,” said Choice.

Choice says they must hope, pray, and brace for the worst with the hurricane making landfall.

“I spoke to one of my cousin and they say one of the ackee tree had blown down already yesterday, but I hope nothing has happened down there and hope them safe with God’s grace,” said Choice.

Choice says he’s also worried about people in Jamaica who have farms and what could be destroyed, like ackee trees, bananas, and coconuts.

Hurricane Melissa is forecast to be the worst storm in Jamaica’s history.
