Months after a teen girl died after undergoing a dental procedure in a Chicago suburb, her cause of death has been released.
According to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office, 17-year-old Sophie Farmer died of “complications of dental extraction surgery under sedation.” The medical examiner also listed an ARID1B gene mutation and “multiple neurologic abnormalities” as contributing factors.
The Grayslake Fire Protection District confirmed it was called on July 21 to the scene of an “unresponsive patient” at an address in the northern suburb. Sophie Farmer was pronounced dead at Advocate Children’s Hospital in Park Ridge three days later.
Northern Lakes Oral Surgery and Dental Implant Center, which is located at the address fire officials responded to, declined comment at the time of the incident.
Details surrounding her death have remained limited since.
According to the Foundation for ARID1B Research, “ARID1B-related disorder is a rare genetic disorder that causes significant development delays and disabilities.”
It was not immediately clear what role the genetic mutation could play in sedation.
In an obituary, Farmer’s family said she died “surrounding by her family and friends.”
“From the moment she came into our lives, Sophie filled our hearts with immeasurable love and laughter. She loved boating, camping, and she never met a dog that she didn’t want to keep,” her obituary read.
