With Halloween just a few days away, everyone is scrambling to gather supplies for the ghostly holiday. Between figuring out costumes, stocking up on enough candy for trick-or-treaters and planning festive parties, it’s easy for things to slip through the cracks. And with the health and safety of our loved ones at the top of our mind, it’s always helpful to know which candy to steer clear of ahead of the big day.
On October 27, Zingerman's Candy Manufactory announced a recall of two popular candy bars after a mix-up in the production line. According to the notice, Peanut Butter Crush Bars containing cashews and Cashew Cow Bars containing peanuts were distributed in packaging that didn’t reveal the presence of these ingredients. The issue is said to have been caused by a temporary breakdown in production and packaging, which the company says has now been resolved.

To date, no illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall. However, nut allergies are serious and should not be taken lightly. The products in question were distributed to retailers in Michigan and New York and have since reached consumers via retail stores. Anyone with an allergy or severe sensitivity to cashews or peanuts could be at risk of a life-threatening reaction if they consume the following products:

To further help identify these candy bars at home, the Peanut Butter Crush Bars come in Zingerman’s Candy Manufactory yellow and purple 2-ounce boxes labeled Peanut Butter Crush, and the Cashew Cow Bars come in light blue and yellow 2-ounce boxes labeled Cashew Cow. Each respective product's lot number can be found on the packaging.
“While our range of Candy Bars is one of our most popular products, the number of bars affected was a tiny fraction of our output,” a spokesperson for Zingerman’s said. “From a single Lot #174250, there were a total of 156 Peanut Butter Crush Bars and 78 Cashew Cow candy bars affected by the recall. We notified all of the wholesale customers who received them, and they have been removed from sale, with many returned to us.”
While Zingerman’s continues the recall process, consumers who have the identified bars in their possession are urged to not consume and rather discard or return to the place of purchase for a refund.
