ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Category 5 Major Hurricane Melissa is poised to make landfall over Jamaica late this morning to early this afternoon. With sustained winds of 175 MPH and a barometric pressure of 901 millibars, it is one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes ever recorded. Catastrophic damage from flash floods, storm surge, strong winds, and landslides will cause widespread infrastructure damage, power and communication outages, and community isolation. We will continue to update you as the situation develops.
In Rochester, it was another freezing cold morning with lows in the mid to upper 20s, causing frost across the region. It will be a crisp and sunny fall day, with highs in the low 50s and winds climbing to 10-15 MPH out of the northeast. A freeze warning is in effect overnight as temperatures are expected to dip to the low 30s.
Tomorrow will be another crisp fall day, then we are tracking the arrival of our next rain system on Thursday. This will give us a nice beneficial soaking rain, but it will also bring gusty winds and lead to lake effect showers in the following days as it passes to our northeast, driving in cold air over the lakes from the northwest.
Halloween is likely to feature these showers through the evening, but the exact timing and spacing of the rain is hard to nail down. Tune back in over the next day to see where the rain is likely to be. In terms of wind, right now northwest gusts up to 30-40 MPH are possible. While we currently are Green on the Threat Tracker for Halloween, stay tuned as we may issue a Yellow Alert within the next 24 hours as the wind forecast becomes more clear.
Breezy showers continue Saturday, and chances for beneficial rain continue through the first half of next week.
